Herdsmen Injured in Fight With Lion

Three brothers are recovering at Narok District Hospital after they were attacked by a lion.

The three were herding cattle and goats at Leleshwa area near Narok town when the beast pounced.

Area councillor Keringoti ole Sadera said the brothers suffered legs, hands and stomach injuries while fighting the beast.

He said the lion had killed three goats and was preying on the cows when the three descended on it in an attempt to rescue the animals.

During the half-hour duel, Mr Kipash ole Nameli, 33, broke his hand after falling from a tree.

The lion then grabbed Mr John Nkurumwa, 27, and mauled him on the head and left leg before breaking his right hand.

It then pounced on Mr Kimaren Nkurumwa, 35, injuring him on the leg and piercing his stomach with its claws.

Four of the herders' dogs fled during the encounter.

Screams and cries from the brothers attracted passers-by who rushed to their rescue and took them to a Kenya Wildlife Services office at Ewaso Nyiro trading centre. The KWS officers later took the three to hospital.

The district clinical officer, Mr Mpoke ole Kotikoti, described the conditions of the three as stable but said he would refer Mr John Nkurumwa for specialised treatment.

Mr Sadera gave KWS one week to move the lions to Maasai Mara National Reserve. He said residents would start killing the animals if the organisation fails to act. He accused KWS officers of valuing the lives of animals more than those of people.

"Whenever a lion is killed, residents are harassed and arrested, but when people are attacked by the animals, no action is taken," he said.

By yesterday, KWS rangers were still combing the forest looking for the killer lion.
