Verney Carron Shotgun
      #178282 - 03/04/11 11:15 AM

Hey guys, I've recently inherited a Verney Carron, St-Étienne double barrel shotgun. There's not much info out there on the gun besides the actual Verney Carron website. Does anyone have knowledge as to what these babies are worth, or where to find out what year it was manufactured?
Any help is appreciated and I will post pictures ASAP.

Just another guy who probably spends too much time and money on this hobby... wait, is that possible?

Mate if you can post some photos here of the shotgun plus the serial number and other markings - I'm sure the V-C guys will be able to look it up for you!!

Need a good description, ie box lock, sidelock, ejectors, condition etc. V-C has made lots of shotguns over the years, some were entry level and some were top of the line, your gun could be worth hundreds or thousands. Most of the records were destroyed in the late 50's in a flood so getting a mfg date is slim for older guns.

Looks like it was a near top of the line sidelock. A few screws are not timed correctly so I have to wonder who was looking in the action. If the gun has not been abused and the barrels are good it would be worth several thousand dollars. Without having it in hand it is hard to be precise.

The gun is Eibar (Spain) proofed post 1931.
It does not look like a Verney-Carron gun.
Could it be that only the case label come from them?
Best regards,
WC

I don't see these marks at this site for either french or spanish.

https://store.bluebookinc.com/Info/PDF/Firearm/Proofmarks.pdf
But if it is spanish the ZH may stand for Zabela Hermaos (Zabela Brothers)

"Standard directory of proof marks" by G Wirnsberger page 156.
You're right about Zabala.
Lifted from a google search:

Gunmark Kestrel
Q I have a Gunmark Kestrel side by side shotgun. I am trying to find out
how old it is etc.
A KESTREL is a line of side by sides manufactured by ZABALA Hermanos (located in EIBAR, SPAIN) ;the manufacturer mark stamped under the chambers and on the water table is certainly a Z left of a H in a shield For some informations, have a look at www.aceros-de-hispania.com at the ESCOPETAS PARALELAS section

I had a nice Zabala side lock 12 ga years ago. Not the best quality IMO but it was pretty good.
