Thanks Mike,
How about something like this? This is my 20 gauge rifled deer gun. The mounts are machined to stradle the rib and tig welded all around. This is set up with a folding rear sight for clearance and uses Leupold quick detach rings with a low powered Leupold scope. Bob

Bob,

As promised, here are two photos of the end result. The process that I dreamed up worked slick as can be. I've ended up with 5 bottom ribs, in 5 different widths from 3/8" on up to 5/8". The parent stock is still in great shape so I'm going to oil it well and put it away in a safe place. I doubt that I have more than 5 more double rifle projects left in these old bones but, "quien sabe?".

Best,
Ron.

Ron,

It looks like you've just figured out the best way to get several bottom ribs done at once. It sure beats my method of slicing up old barrels to use for ribs! It also looks like in the pictures that you have quite a bit of material left to make a few more. Will you be able to get all of it cut for under ribs or not? Either way, you have just had a great idea! Congratulations! Most people won't go the that kind of trouble to make ribs, but it looks to me like the best way to get them.

We may have to do some trading down the line a ways, what do you think of that idea? Bob

Bob,

I'm sure that at least 5 or 6 more could be had out of the remainder. As they say, "necessity is the mother of invention". It's been my experience that very few problems are insurmountable if you think them through logically and aren't afraid to invest some time and elbow grease. Let me know what you need down the road. I've got to get to the point where I've got the barrels installed in the monoblock of my nascent 9.3x74R before I'll be able to determine which of these ribs will fit and look the best. I wouldn't part with any of the five until then. Realistically that's a couple of months out!

Best,
Ron.

Dear fellow doublegun nuts,
In an effort to get back to the original subject, I wanted to let everyone know that the first of the longer 24 inch ribs have been completed and are being shipped this week. I was originally going to make these 24.5 inches long but ran into a glitch. I can buy 24 inch packing tubes at the Post Office that will hold items up to a 24 inches long, but if it is any longer the caps don't fit right. Most people don't need the extra 1/2 inch anyway so we shortened these back to 24 inches. They look just like the first shorter ones, but longer. The standing quarter rib section is about 7.5 inches long, the milled out middle is about 15 inches long, and the front sight ramp is 1.5 inches long. Bob H.

If any of you fellows out there are interested in getting a top rib for a project gun, please let me know ASAP. Even if you aren't going to order it now, I need to know about how many of these to make up. I have to order them well in advance and pay for all of them up front so I usually only get small batches at any one time. It would help me greatly if I knew how many of you might be interested in the next six months or so. Thanks,Bob H.

I ordered 10 of Bob's ribs for my double rifles. I couldn't be happier with the ribs or the service. Both are excellent.

The machining on the ribs is very well done and consistent over all 10 ribs.

Mr. Hyden was prompt to reply to all my emails and very thorough in answering questions and responding to requested changes.

He has earned my business.

Here are a few pictures

I receieved my top rib from Robert the other day and am well pleased. It will greatly simplify the top rib installation and sight addition. The transaction was smooth and shipping quick. I will probalby have to start a new project and get another.
BTW, do any of you have some bottom ribs? The ones I took off of my donor gun are too narrow. Thanks in advance.
Doug

Doug,
If you know exactly what the widths at each end are and the overall length, I can make you one up. Contact me at my home email address and I'll see what I can do for you. Bob H.
