I wonder how shooting a 10lbs straight stocked bolt action 500 Jeffery is like compared to a Merkel double .470? A lot more recoil or rather manageable? I suppose it is possible to make lighter loads for practice? Is the recoil pretty much the same if I lower the velocity to approxiately the same with the two calibers?

Yes to all.
I have both and the 500J is heavier recoil but you can load it down a bit which makes it much more manageable.

How do they come out compared with .458 loaded to its full potential? I tried a 458 lott once and found the recoil rather harsh compared to the .470.. This was a 9,5lb rifle I think

It all depends on the stock, weight of gun etc.
The 458 and Lott can be pretty brutal, I know, I have one. For some reason they seen to be "sharper" in the recoil than some larger bores.
I like to use slow burning powders which i think makes it more of a shove than a hit.

Your merkel has a lot of stock drop compared to a properly stocked .500 jeff, so the merkel is likely to hit your face harder, but the Jeff will push you back more. Nonetheless, IMO there is no question that the .500 jeff has a much stouter punch to the shoulder than the .470. But as mentioned above, almost any gun can be miserable, like a 7.5 pound 458 win mag with a hard rubber pad.

The 500 Jeffery is pretty much in the same class as a 500NE I suppose. A Gundealer once told me that a straight stocked Krieghoff 500 NE wasn't any worse than my Merkel .470. That lead me to belive that a 500 j with a well made stock would be just a trifle more unpleasant than my Merkel.
At what gunweigt would a 500 J start to feel like a fast .458 cal? I'm fiering that 10lbs is a bit too light for a 500 J?

I haven't shot a double 470 NE or 500 NE, but I can tell you my 11.25 lb CZ 550 500 Jeffery is NOT to be shot from a bench without a lead sled, at least by me again. It's absolutely fine offhand, but a killer off the bench. I'm shooting 570g TSX's at 2410 fps so if the 500 NE double weighs the same, my 500 Jeffery will kick considerably more. Still, it's a hoot to shoot offhand or hunt with. I have a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm scope on it and it hasn't gotten close to "kissing" me yet.

Just for comparison, I just bought a Remington XCR II in 375 H&H that weighs 7 3/8 lbs with scope (6 1/2 lbs without scope) and it's recoil is neglible compared to the 500 Jeffery.
