Can You explain this?
      #176916 - 11/03/11 12:10 AM

I am really puzzled by this clip.
From Idaho I think

wolf and Malamutes

the wolf seems pretty miffed?

I believe I can explain it. The wolf is "miffed" because he didn't get some of what is normally described in American English in terms usually associated with felines, not canines. Kitty cat?

I also believe you're not really puzzled.

Sincerely yours,

Captain Obvious.

Forgive my poor command of English please.

Are You thinking what I also think, something linked with rut? IMHO there are no other reasons for a wolf to confront 3 healthy malamutes. And I also marvel at malamutes not very impressed by a wolf?
When young, I presented my dog, an oversized german shepherd,to a caged wolf. This dog which was the top dog all over the villages around, was ominously squealling and crawling on the ground, mad with fear.
Here in France, the only dog able of confronting wolves is the Patou.

All the others varieties of dog are fearing wolves.

Your English is fine. I may have been mistaken but I thought you were trying to be somewhat humorous and not entirely serious about being confused. I responded in a like manner & hope you didn't take it the wrong way.

I've watched the video and it doesn't look to me like the wolf is showing aggression, just interest in the dogs. So I'm led to believe this interaction was probably motivated by the sex drive, not the food drive.

The dog you call the Patou we call a Great Pyrenees. As far as the Malamute not being impressed by the wolf, the modern breed is descended from general purpose working & hunting dogs belonging to the Inuit in Alaska. It seems reasonable that they would have selected for animals that were more or less capable of coping with the presence of wolves, as I can't imagine dogs that couldn't would have been of much use.

Seems to me, after watching the video - one of the Malamutes might have been in heat, or one in the area, perhaps away from those in the yard - a 4th or 5th? kept separate due to condition. I was not surprised to see the dogs put the run on the wolf from their yead, his with tail between his legs in submission. Certainly he/she was curious.

What surprised me, was not seeing what I'd hope for in the entire video.

That would be a red spray hitting the snow on the off side of that wolf, before it even got close to the road, Nice hide for a hat or gun case, Eh- or SSS.

With the wolfs submissive behavior, I can't help but wonder if this one has been raised in captivity. Wolves born in the wild in my part of the world don't act like this towards dogs.

I find the video footage they have, looks somewhat "pre-arranged" so Erik might be spot on.

You guys could be right.

But it appears to me this could also be a juvenile, inexperienced wolf.

Freeloader - probably right supossition - it was slightly undersized and timid for an adult "BC wolf". Nice colour though. Look good hanging on a pole in front of my brother's lodge.

I don't blame you. I'd shoot it, too.

It does seem that just maybe the wolf acting just goofy enough to be a young animal newly out on its own.

I used to have a yard full of Russian wolfhounds and Borzois. I always wondered how they would react to a wolf. One day one of the Borzois wandered over toward a neighbor's dog which was foolishly trespassing in my front field. The other dog lost its nerve and tried to run away, whereupon the Borzoi was on him like a flash and seized him by the nape of the neck and started slamming him to the ground. I broke it up, and the neighbor's dog never trespassed again.

I was later told that Borzois handle coyotes that way, but that it takes two of them to handle a wolf, one on each side. No wolves in Tennessee, but plenty of coyotes.

My Russian wolfhounds stood between 34" and 39" at the shoulder, and weighed 150-180 pounds. I had to buy dog food in 500 pound lots from the Co-Op to keep them fed. Unfortunately giant dogs don't live long, and all are in doggy heaven now.

Interesing, animal Xausa - Borzois - looking much like an oversized Afghan.
