Chapuis ugex question...
      #176830 - 09/03/11 02:04 AM

First off I would like to say hello. I just joined the forum and thinks its great, so many of my questions have been answered just browsing. I recently had my first double given to me - a Chapuis Ugex 9.3X74R. I was wondering is it possible to have a set of shotgun barrels made for the rifle? If so, what is involved? who do I talk to? any idea of the cost involved?
Thanks for your time, and all advice is helpful.

I asked that when I ordered my rifle. The shotty tubes were 3K extra IIRC and the rifle would need to go back to the factory for several months. I passed

Big J, welcome to the forums. Your 9.3 Chapuis will no doubt be a very useful rifle in Canada. Ideal in fact I think.

Shotgun barrels will add to the DR and be a great extra. As usual the price on any of these things seems "high", but ...

With my own 9.3, a much lesser Tikka U/O, I do have shotgun barrels for it, and also three other barrel sets which need some minor fitting, but alas I know if it is sent off I won't have it for several months as well (usually and probably ) so I too am delaying sending it off. But it has got to be done oneday.

If you load your own try my regulation load for my Chapuis. It's 65 grns oof IMR 4831 under about any 286 grn bullet. Mine doesn't seen to have a favorite. It likes them all!
I favor the cheap Privi bullets from Graff and sons. I don't know who handles this brand down south in your area.

Thanks Mike. I havent seen Privi here, but I have some 285gr Norma Oryx and can get more. My loading manuals list 64.5gr of IMR4831 as a compressed, and max load. They do however load the H4831 up to 70gr. Do you think 65gr of H4831 would work?

I have only used IMR powder in this one and 65 grns isn't max. despite any book. Work your way up and you'll see it's OK.

If this is youir first one then as you work on loads remember that the object of the game is not speed like a bolt gun. It's a decent speed that keeps the LH on the LH and the RH on the RH and small groups.
If the tubes cross, LH printing on the RH and vice versa then it's too fast.

Thanks Mike, that is exactly the knid of thing I needed to know. What range do you think is optimal to test at? And is it just wrong to mount a scope on a double?

Start at twenty five yds and then fifty then one hundred.

Remember that a DR isn't a bolt gun! DO NOT let a rest contact the rifle. Keep your hand on the forearm and the stock resting on your shoulder at all times whe pulling the trigger. I like to sit totally upright when on a bench so my body reacts just like shooting off hand. (Off hand is best)
One of the members her has taken a coyote at just under 300 yds.. hitting it twice!
I wouldn't hesitate to take that caliber out after anything in Canada or Ak. Parka squirrels on up to big white fuzzy critters!
Now lets see some pics of that rifle.
Load up and go out an play!

BigJ,
If you haven't done so already I suggest you round up a copy of Graheme Wrights book,"Shooting the British double Rifle." It's a must have to undestand these beasts.

Will do! Any suggestions on where to look for a copy? I hope I dont get stoned for asking, but is it just wrong to mount a scope on a double?

I don't know where you southerners get your gear.. I would suggest Huntingtons. Scopes improve a rifle such as this. I used a QD by Recknagle(sp). I used a small 1.5X5 Leupy.

On your rib there is 4 small screws that need ot be removed to remove the rib sections for base instalation. They're a MF'r to undo and I had to drill the heads off on mine.
