When less is more, .376 Steyr
      #176663 - 06/03/11 01:32 AM

As I've posted earlier I was deliberating getting either a .300 Wby or .376 Steyr in Dakota model 76 lefty. I went with the .376 Steyr and the more I study the ballistics the more I like it.

The .376 Steyr is a step away from "Ultra Magnum, Short Magnum, etc.", but rather, less velocity in a smaller standard case. The virtues of the .375 are kept and can be made into a shorter lighter rifle that is perfect for big game out to 250 yards but can take dangerous game if needed.

However, the biggest plus for me is Less Recoil. As I get older (only 46 now) even the great .375 H&H would get weary. I'm sure it failed commercially because of the "need for speed" mentality.

So there you have it. Less is more!

I agree - the .376 Steyr will easily develope the .375H&H's 1912 ballistics, the ballistics that made the .375 magnum famous. My own little .375 Wildcat pretty much duplicates the .376 Steyr. Last fall, I chronographed a BRNO ZKK .375 H&H with some factory 300gr. Silvertip ammo. They produced 2,474fps average, a mere 2 feet per second faster than my little .375/06IMP's 300gr. handloads that were NOT loaded to maximum.

Bonanza, that little Steyr has similar case capacity to the short magnums, btw.

G'Day Fella's,

A couple of mates/customers have Steyr Scout rifles, in .376 Steyr.
I don't know much more than that but I do know, they don't want to sell them!

Doh!

PS, I forgot to mention Bonanza's, Bonanza!
When you can Bonanza, please share an image or two of the Dakota with us!!!

I like the exotic more unusual cartridges. .376 Steyr is similar I believe in power to the 9.3x62? In any case a fine hunting round.

.376 Steyr is a great cartridge. All of the similar ones are.

I prefer the 9.3x62 not so much because it is superior, which it isn't, but rather because I can use both 9.3 bullets straight from the box or size down .375's if I want to.

The .376 might have negated the .375 H&H and 9.3x62 if it had been whumped up before both of those.

Bonanza, you've got a good one.
