Merkel 141 E new for half price
      #176436 - 02/03/11 06:49 AM

Ok folks:

You are not going to believe this. I have the opportunity to buy a Merkel 141 E, coin fininsh for $4700.00. This gun is brand new in the box BUT, it DOES NOT come with paperwork. No book no test target.

Do I take a chance and buy it?

The other option is the same rifle with colour case hardening WITH the paperwork for $5000.00.

Target show two holes with a vertical spread of 3/4 inch.

Quick, I need your opinion. I love the coin finish but would settle for colour case hardening.

Kindest regards,

Carpediem

What caliber(s)? That would be more important to me than the papers or the finish, if they are different calibers.

You know I almost bought that case hardened one today. It is regulated for 232g Normas. As far as I know all the 141's are regulated for 232g bullets.

The only reason I did not buy that rifle was because it does not have a front scope mounting dovetail. It has the rear mount but no front one. I don't know if you can get a mount that slides on the rear base and has 2 rings. Might be able to. I am researching it right now.

That seems kind of weird that they would have only one mount for the scope. What do you make of it?

The mount could be for one of the Holographic sights.

The other option is one of the ONE piece mounts from Grim Reaper - do a google search.

They might have something as it is an all in one unit.

Thanks 500 Nitro.

The barrels are 550 mm long. anyone think this will be an issue with the shorter barrels?

Shouldn't be.

Would make a great scrub / pig gun.

I think the one piece mount is probably for the red dot type sights. I have no doubt that there is something out there that can be used to mount a 2 ring system on to that single base.

I do want a scoped double, even an over under so I will wait for one with different scope mounting.

That is a pretty little gun though. I remember that they are built on a 28g sized action, smaller than the 140 action. I will bet the distance between the fining pins is less than 1". The small bbls and light weight will make recoil brisk. That is why they are only regulated with 232g bullets. The adjustable regulation may let you get 250g bullets to shoot at a velocity that produces manageable recoil.

Alberta

You are correct, I should have added Red Dot scopes as well as the Holographic scopes.

Well guys and gals:

Thanks for all the info. I am going to sleep on it tonight and see how I feel in the morning.

I am quite interested to know how much smaller this Merkel is compared to my Antonio Zoli side by side.

Great carry gun I am sure but how would it be for recoil, I wonder. As stated earlier, small frame, light gun, short barrels.

Any Merkel 141 owners want to pony up with advice?

Kindest regards,

Carpediem

Hi
I think that Merkels 141 comes with a devise in the muzzle
that allows to change point of impact , so you can regulate
them for the specific load you wish.

Pulki,

You are correct. These guns are the type you can regulate.

an a dditional advantage as I reload.

The rifle is regulated using the 232 grain Vulcan ammo. How do you think this petite framed gun would handle the recoil of a 286 grain bullet?

A bit more recoil than normal.

If you load heavier bullets in a gun, expect more recoil.

As to the frame, how much difference is there between this gun and a normal Merkel in 9.3 x 74R ?

edit
I found the guns you are talking about. They look fine.
I Would suggest you have a look on some forums in Europe
and see what they have to say (and use Google translation !!!)

Had a look at the Fronkonia website and saw the guns I have been looking at. Average price at Fronkonia is 5,000.00 Euros. I think it is worth it.

I had a second look at one of the targets that was e-mailed to me. This is the target for the rifle in colour case hardening. The date on the target is 06.12.04, which I assume is 2004. Interesting these guns are only seeing the light of day at this time.

Noting I would worry about. DOCTERsight only requires one dovetail. I'm sure Merkel will supply the front pivot mount base. Depending on the type of optics you want the distance varies between the mounting dovetails.

My FN double came in the same configuration

I had noticed that as well. Not sure if it was 04 or 06. Don't know why it's so old. The grey grid squares are 1cm and I would guess the bullets holes are less than 3/4 of an inch apart.

If I remember correctly I had priced these guns out before and they were slightly less money than the 140 which can be had for $6500. I think the price at the time was around under $6000 for the most basic gun.

I think the jury is still out on these. I have not been able to find many reports of these "new" adjustable regulation Merkels which have been out for some time...

Being that I was the guinea pig and owned one of, if not, the first Baikal 30-06 double as well as the first Sabatti rifle in Canada, I will let others go first this time.

It I guess it could accept the Rechnegal (spelling?) SSK-11 mount that is 12mm wide. Or Dr. mount. Also the front base could intentionally be left out so the individual can get the dovetail machined into the rib in the exact location were he needs it for the length of the scope he has chosen.

Not sure.

I don't know why Tony is selling those guns so cheaply, but I'd suggest that if you want one you'd better grab it quickly. I doubt that they'll last long, especially now that you've told the whole planet about them.

If the regulation system on the front of the barrels is anything like that on the Blasers, you will be happy. It is not for the purists but does work quite well on the D99 I have. I can shoot puny groups with it that you would not expect from a drilling, a side by side, or me. It is also a 9.3 x 74R, which is a really good cartridge. Nothing fancy or flashy...it does make an impression on hogs!

I agree with Ron Vella...you have told the whole world!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

I actually found a picture on one of the web sites of the regulation system.

I think it might have been on one of the Cabelas sites - NOTE - All 3 on the 3 Different Cabelas sites had been sold !!!

It didn't look bad at all - a flush end on the barrels, what looked like a Hex screw.

Better than some other POS that are on some other "self regulating" Double's.

I'd grab one at that price.
