Excellent story. My grandfather always said that if I am not seeing any bucks(mule deer/coues deer)that I had better leave all my junk at the house. Travel light he'd say. Just take a knife a canteen, an apple and some rope, you will get em. You know he was indeed right.

LOL.
I on occassion would take those words to new levels:

like forgetting the knife or the water and definately not having rope. LOL
My scout, drivers side door was a bloody mess one day, I had sliced my finger down to the bone and had to let it dangle outside on the 1 hr ride home.:o Yep, left my first aid kit at the house.

Again excellent adventure and thanks for sharing.

Great story!

Recently, I had a similar experience. After killing my bison I had the job of bringing all the meat home. I killed the animal approximately 6 hours from my home so I did have it butchered on site. Well, with it not hanging very long and being butchered with in hours of being killed the meat was rather "wet". Much of it was ground up and there were BAGS of steak packages. I had driven with a friend, who luckily had a large pick up truck (gotta love those Dodge Ram diesels!)

We stopped for lunch on the trip home.

After a 45 minute stop we went back out to the truck to find a rather large puddle of blood under it. It was also actively dripping. I wonder what people were thinking who parked next to us and went in to eat!

I stay not far from Johannesburg and I got the same problem Aspenhill,people cant stop staring when I drive through town with my carcasses on the back of my pick-up.It is just legs and horn all over the show.When you stop at home your "anti hunting, vegetarian neighbour" drops like a vulture on you to see what is for free!

Thought you might enjoy the following story: Last year I was hunting a guest farm near Warmbaad(sp)where the owner needed to have a couple of excess animals taken off the farm. He called my P.H. up on the telly, and asked if he had anyone who wanted a Blue Wildebeest. I of course was quite game to take a good one. Now let me say that this couldn't be considered a "hunt" by any stretch of the imagination. It was simply removing an extra animal from the property-the land owner got the meat to sell, and I got a species I wanted for my den. Anyway, after going out and collecting the critter, we loaded it up into the back of the truck just as a couple of campers came down the road. They saw the Wildebeest in the back of our truck, and got out to take a look at it. The woman who got out of the car asked the land owner if it was sick, as it appeared to be sleeping. The owner told her "yes, and this fine chap was kind enough to come out and give it a 300 grain pill to help it out". She then replied "oh, that's so nice of him", and got back in her car and drove on.

True story!

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Mike - sometimes it takes several "pills" to help the poor animals out.

Coues - I actually cut my hand too with my trusty leatherman gutting knife (well it did the job as it was the only knife I had). So some of the blood was mine.

Anne - well you do look like the classic profile of a mass-murderer so he people in the diner should have been worried

Especially if they had big hairy coats and a couple of horns.

Due to anti hunt flak we no longer carry our deer exposed (less ammo for the green [censored] heads the better) but here is a shot of a couple on the toyota.
Nitro look closely and you will see that the upper most antler on the stag is a true "royal" with its three points,only one i have ever seen.
