As most of you know both FATBOY404 and myself have our rifles built by Tony Small (AFRO408) Nickal Traditional Gunsmiths http://nickalguns.net/ useing Lothar Walther barrels. While these rifles are very nice to look at both Neale and I use these rifles. They are not safe queens and must perform.

Well it's bragging time. Today in 35 C (95 F) heat, supported off a bipod at a lazered (Leica 900) 249 yards, I put three rounds into a lovely Right Isosceles Trangle measuring 1.105" on one of my printed targets.

I have been shooting my 7x57 in preparation for a red Deer shoot in NZ this April. With 521 rounds through the barrel I have been learning and practising the fall of shot at different ranges. I use empty 750g round tins of Milo which have a 5" circular base. I lay these down at different ranges and practise hitting them.

The MAGIC recipe:

Norma unfired brass,
Remington 9 1/2 primers
(I tried Remington 9 1/2 and Federal 210 primers and in my rifle the 9 1/2's gave better accuracy.)
OAL 3.070"
40 grains of 2208/Varget
Sierra 140 SptBt's.
Average Velocity 2,499 fps

Now if I can get the temperature in NZ up to 35 deg I'll be right. Well done and Thx AFRO.

Well done Tophet1.
Those Sierras are an accurate bullet for sure.I used them in my 7x57 as well.

Hope the Red deer doesn't jump up at 25 yards mate or you will be disappointed !!.
It will be like blokes preparing for a Tahr hunt with long range practice and zeroed rifles for 300 yards and then stumble onto a Tahr at 20 yards.

I'll try to get some decent pics of my rifle tomorrow for you Adam.

Neale, I'm practiseing on Milo cans at 50 and 100 as well. Don't worry, if they pop up at 25 yards I'll hold (just on fur) on the bottom of the briskett.

I know SFA about deer so it will be all new.

Thats a very light load for the 7x57. Did you look for a node higher up or were you specifically looking in the lower pressure range. Not sure where or when you are going to chase the Reds but if you get onto a big one who is coming into his winter coat with a soaking wet hide (and maybe a bit of mud)from the rain I would want a bit more steam.
The 160gn Woodleigh PP is a good bullet and over 46gn h4350 (2209) gets 2700fps in my own 7x57 and a margin for some of the maybe's of a hunt.

ARFO408 now has a lead time of 12 months for work unfortunately.

I have another accurate load with the Hornady 154 Interlock flat base spitzer at 2,461. Would you recommend that load VonGruff ?

I would feel more confident with that bullet and velocity over the 139 at the same speed.

It will also hold up better if a bit of range is involved. My concern would be if it was against a wet hide as it can initiate expansion and limit penetration in some cases.

You say you have good heavy bullet loads in a previous post on the build links

She shoots great Typical Lothar Walther barrel. Numerous different weights all shoot sub 1" at 100 yards. 140's, 160's and 175's, so far.

I'll pay excess baggage and the 7x57 and 9.3x62 wil go. I can't afford DG so it's Plains Game for me.

I doubt I'll try to shoot anything larger than Kudu with it though. My 7x57 was designed as my Kudu rifle as I am obsessed with them. I don't find them at all tough to kill.

The kudu ara a big animal but usually hunted in the dry but the big reds you are after are sometimes wet with either rain and or mud from wallow's so I would look to the heavier bullets for that very reason. Long way to come to loose an animal because of a lack of penetration. JMHO

That is a beauty of a rifle. It looks as if you have followed the 1904 Africa model.

Tah for the valuable input. I appreciate it.

I basically gave AFRO Carte Blanche to build the rifle with limited input from me. The stock and action are the same as my 9.3x62, however they balance differently. The emergency rear Ghost Ring sight is effective in range conditions out to 200 yards (witnessed by FATBOY404 and 450 Ackley)
with the 154 load.

44 grains of 2209 under the 154 does the trick so I will start practising with that load and take it to the Shakey Isles.

Do you intend to hunt with the ghost ring or have it as back up and hunt with a scope?
I have a rigby type of bolt mounted aperture on my own 7x57 and have taken animals out to 185yds so far with it (and 160gn cast boolits)and like you am confident out a bit further. I carry a 2-7 in qd rings that rides in a leather scope bag on my back til and unless it is needed.

Hope the shaking stops by the time you get here in april and you have a great hunt.Where are you heading

The ghost ring is purely back up in case the scope fails. I may use it with 175 RNSP's in the thick Bushveldt along the Limpopo in Boswana in 2014. (A group hunt I've organised. We have one vacancy ... ?)

I'm off to the North Island near Taihape. Locals with a farm, 3 foot fences next to the Ruahine ranges. 5 weeks to go. Can't wait.
