Looks like 9.3x57 and his Cougar Chasing Winchester outfit.

In fact, I think it is. Isn't that the Idaho Sawtooth Mountains in the background?

What is the rope for? Live catching and hog tying the griz?

Ropes for tying himself in a tree for sleeping, while he waits for the grizzly to die from the .44/40 shallow holes & poke wounds from his knife.

The biggest of our bear are impressive. Here are a couple of big ones taken on the Alaska peninsula over the past few years.

Not being as brave as the cartoon guy with a knife - I chose the cowards way and and used my 30-06

Both are really nice bears, Phil. '06 would not be my choice - normally not your's either, but there is a difference between a hunting, and a stopping rifle, here as well as in Africa.

The top bear just made the 28" skull minimum for B&C and the bottom one on the ladder I think finally measured 28 8/16"

Here it is in the flesh - so to speak - it died in a depression so it does not look as large as the first one but my guess is it weighed 200-300 pounds more as three of us could not roll it out of the depression and I had to go get more help. You get an idea of it's true size when you see it on the ladder. Each toe was a large as the average man's wrist.

I have had a few bow hunters over the past years who, when finally face to face with a large bear at bow range, decided they might have been a bit rash in bringing only a bow.

I remember a story about a hunter on Afognak Island that killed the Man in the Brown Suit with a pen knife after the Bear had knocked his rifle away. Somehow he managed to cut the Jugular I think. It's been awhile, maybe 15 years?

Sarg, Both the hunter and I were using 375 Rugers. His was the standard African model and mine is the Alaskan with the Hogue stock replaced with one of the standard Ruger "tupperware" stocks.
