Greener Facile Princeps 577 ??
      #175111 - 08/02/11 10:59 PM

Well I've been looking for a Top Lever Hammerless 577BPE or Light Nitro for a long time now & had a lot of fasle starts , just found this one , was stated as full Nitro , but at a very good price for a Nitro , then I remembered a story about a 577 being built on a Facile Princeps "Shot Gun Action"

It would be a brother to Marrakai's "Fat Lady" , I have asked for more detail , I have more photos & it really is a beauty , also been proofed in London 650Gr 2869 Bar , which I can not convert to any thing yet , weight is 11.5Lbs 24in barrels

What do you guys think on this , it is cheap for a full Nitro & about right to high for a 577BPE in this condition .

Keep looking for a real one , that will not doubt hold it's value or increase or look more seriously at this & what would it do ?

Thanks for your thoughts & ideas !

New info , yes it is using Light Nitro loads , 650Gr @ 1650Fps 3in apart at 50yds

That is the ugliest gun I have ever seen. You should feel ashamed to have that in your safe.

If you mail it to me I will quietly dispose of it so no one ever knows that you had it; and save you from becoming emberassed

Beautiful piece. It would be interesting to see what it does on the range.

What does the cartridge look like?

Kindest regards,

Carpediem

I think this gun sold at Australian Arms Auctions in the last year or so.
Looks like it would be a hoot!

Lovely gun Sarg.

The true factory nitro Greener's in a large calibre I have encountered have had a much larger bolster on the action body.

The worrisome issue with this design for a full nitro load is the inherent cracking of the stock at the scallop, and side safety regions. Have a good look at it before you finish the deal.

Looks nice Sarg!
What proof marks are there on the barrel flats?

2869 bar converts to 41,611 psi.

Looks great Sarg!

Call Greener and get their side of the story.
Then, get some loads together and fly out here and chase some cougars with it!

Sarg,

That's a fine looking rifle. Please give more information. I would be proud to have that one.

Congratulations.

Been away working sorry !

Ok , I havn't bought it yet , has not been for sale since 2003 or more , the one on that auction was a 577LN Cape Gun on a Empire shot gun , with a nice restock .

This is (Im 90% sure but have not heard back from the builder yet) built on a shotgun action & was reproofed in London as a rifle , with "Sleeved" stamped on the barrel flats , a amazing job was done on this shotgun/rifle .

It is , as I said a bother of Marrakai's "Fat Lady" made by the same people who make a few of them .
Meant to handle well , with the weight in the right places .

If the action is proofed to 41,611psi with a 650Gr , that must be close to full Nitro levels , mustn't it ?

My thoughts are what to do on buying it , spend my savings on this , which looks very nice , but it won't appreciate like a real Vintage Double Rifle would , but can be shot with real mondern hard bullets (I think) I dont like the Greener safety & as Generalwar saids , weak in the stock & not a reinforced action ?

So keep looking for the right one , or take a punt ?

Cartrigde looks like this , for Nitro , Light Nitro/Nitro for Black & BPE= Black Powder Express

Except NFB & BPE , more than likely would have Lead or paper patched slug .

Thank you to all who have posted & PM me with info & thoughts , much appreciated !

Here is a target shoot at 5o yards , 2 softs & 2 soilds

And here is a full Nitro 577NE Greener double rifle action I saw some time ago , with the reinforcement strap , I have seen on another , so might be factory ?

The action LOOKS very much like the shot gun action , but I don't know size & weight of action .

Thanks to all !

In Greener’s book ‘The Greener Story’ on page 139 plate # 296 you can see what I was referring to on the bolster size on there double rifle frames.

I hope this information is useful.

Thank you War , I didn't mean any thing towards what you said , as I'm sure you know more about doubles than I .

Just the only Large Greener I had a pic of , I think you are right on this rifle how ever .

The trouble is , I don't really want a 13Lb + Full Nitro rifle (and can not afford one) I like the old English rifles , but with the old barrel steel , modern bullets & solids are not so good .

So need a modern rifle or a conversion & get a nice old double to have & play with .

Should ask Sabatti to make a light Nitro 577 (light in load & weight) for me LoL !

Cheers
