Jeffery 475 No 2

A local shop has gotten in several nice firearms of late. One is the 475 No 2. It has scroll engraving, nice bores, one standing rear/four folding, and dark wood. The barrels have been reblacked but have a few small scrathes that could have come from being put into/taken out of a safe. Several areas and single spots of pitting are noticable on the barrels. Serial number in the 16,??? range if I remember correctly.

It does appear that some one has been "into" it as the screw slots show evidence of having been turned. While I realize the difficulty in making an estimation without seeing it, I was wondering what is a ballpark selling range on this type of rifle.

$10,000 - 15,000. Maybe. Maybe more, What are they asking? The 475#2 is a very good cartridge and if you aren't worried about buying store bought a better cartridge than the .470.

The asking is 18,900 but the owner stated he had some "wiggle room". It sure did point nicely.

Any of you guys ever had any luck talking the wife out of buying a house and buying the husband another double?

He had a Heym a year or so back and offered it for about 20% less than marked. It was a 458 Win. It sure was nice though.

The owner also stated that he had 10 factory softs and 10 factory solids (Kynock). I didn't ask about a case but he didn't mention it.

He offered to put it back and let me make payments. It was getting hard to say no, so I had to get out of there. Kind of like the recovering alky in a bar I guess.

For that sort of money you would have quite a few doubles to choose from.
Champlins has had a 475#2 Jeffery for a while which is priced at 15 and a half.

For the $18,900 price tag you could buy a Boswell 500 NE once owned by J.A. Hunter. A better cartridge in a rifle with history.
The 475#2 is a great cartridge no doubt but the 470 is much simpler to work with at the reloading bench.

18.2K is too much.

I think the market will support something under $15K for this. Personally I would purchase a new double instead of buying an odd caliber.

However, Fred Bartlett said the 475 no 2 penetrated better on elephant heads than 470 nitro

Thanks for the perspective. It is unusual to see a double around here (rifle that is). I will keep an eye on it; maybe it will come down.

There are some nice pieces on that Champlin website. That clamshell J. P. Sauer catches the eye.
