Drilling, vierling and bergstutzen....
      #174503 - 31/01/11 01:54 PM

Hello all.

I like combination guns and double rifles.
The odd double rifle called Bergstutzen here in Europe is getting more and more interesting. Not so many seen of them, but I do se the point of having one. Two single shots, large and small game, all in one rifle. Great idea.

So, the same with the drilling and the vierling guns.
But, WHEN did they start making these "odd" gun styles? The standard, normal, double rifle is one thing, these are odd balls. But, great odd balls. Making them some of the best hunting tools, when stalking around 100 year or so ago, for roe deer, birds, a fox that had eaten your chicken or a wild boar maybe. They was made to cover all kind of hunting, game, in one gun. It did work.

My guess would be that the 'odd guns' have been around as long as the 'normal' ones. Old Drillings and Vierlings can be found back to the 1840's at least.

Oh, I did not know that the style was so old.
Interesting. The oldest drilling I have seen is from around 1885 and was made in Bavaria. Unknown maker.
Thanks for the information.

Hello vegard,

I found on a hunting webpage the information that Drilling were buildt as blackpowder combination guns beginning 1850, but the munich gunmaker Oberhammer patented a Drilling for centerfire cartridges/breech loading design in the year 1878.

best regards
Rolf
