1980 BRNO 602 .458 Win Mag Photos
      #174230 - 27/01/11 03:45 PM

Seeing there has been quite a bit of interest in BRNO and CZ big bore rifles lately, I thought I'd post a couple of pics of one of my old guiding rifles.

She's a 1980 602, with barrel shortened to 22.5" and magnaported.
I did a few mods like the Slee stock, and also lapped the bolt to the action and got the feeding right etc.
I also modified the bolt handle to allow a lower scope mounting height.
I sold this rifle to a hunting client back in 1995, but recently got to see it again, and snapped a few photos.
The rifle is in the same condition as when I sold it.

Looking to do something similar to an unfired 1982 Brno 602 in 375 H&H I just picked up.
Might shorten the barrel to 24",fit cross bolts, oil finish and bed it.

Looking for a standard trigger as well if you know of any ?.If not Tony Small will make one the same as the one he made for my 404j.

It looks like a very practical setup 470.

4Seventy that is a nice looking rifle. It has that lived in look, indicates good hard work. The wood looks a bit slimmer than on the current crop of CZ550's.

Neale,
Wow, an unfired '82 in .375 H&H, nice score! That sort of thing doesn't come along too often, that's for sure.
Based on how your other big bores have turned out, I'm sure it will be very nice also when completed.

I don't know of any standard triggers for the BRNO's at present, but if anything turns up you'll be the first to know.

Yeah, my rifle was practical and quite plain.
I was living at St George at the time and that's why there is no checkering on the stock.
I bought a Geoff Slee inletted stock straight out of the pantograph, and fitted it up and finished it myself.
Just never found the time to send it off to have some checkering done.
The rifle had come with it's original stock, but the comb was way too low for me. It was also cracked in a couple of places, and there was a piece chipped out behind the tang.
The barrel had already been shortened and ported when I got it.
Ron Webb said he thought that he had done the barrel shortening work.
My 500gn loads were doing over 2100fps, but the gun was very comfortable to shoot for a 458.

Thanks Rule303, she was a plain jane, but nice and reliable.
I should have slimmed the wrist down more than I did.
It felt a little clubby in that respect.
That could still be done at some stage I guess, but the current owner seems very happy with it the way it is.

470.
Was the porting one of the reasons you let her go ?.

I had this done to a 257 Weatherby and sold it a 100 rounds later.
A mate thought it was the only rifle that could set fire to a sheet of paper with the muzzle blast !!!.

The porting never really worried me much on that gun.
There are most likely a few reasons for this.

Firstly my hearing has been badly molested by several '50s BSA rifles I've owned, which were fitted with factory muzzle brakes.
And yes, they were damn noisy things, especially on the 30-06.

Secondly, the 458 being a fairly low velocity cartridge with the 500 grainers, didn't seem to be anywhere near as bad as porting on higher velocity rifles.

Third, the rear ports on that rifles magnaporting, were not angled towards the rear. They deflected the blast straight out to the sides.
Sometimes/often the ones who cop the big blast from muzzle brakes are those standing close when the gun is fired, but it wasn't too bad in that respect either.

Ron Webb commented that it was a very early Australian Magnaport job, one of the first to be done here.

The reason I let the rifle go was that one of my clients really wanted to buy it, and I had a Joseph Lang 360 No2 NE double to use instead.

I know what you mean though, I hate muzzle brakes with a passion, but that one wasn't too bad in the noise department.
