The .300 Winchester has always struck me as a poor afterthought. Winchester belatedly decided to come out with a .300 short magnum after the .30-.338 and the .308 Norma Magnum were well established. They came up with a cartridge which is too long to fit in either chamber, but which has to have bullets seated well past the bottom of the neck in order to keep the OAL down to standard magazine size, which was the reason for the short magnum in the first place.

Moreover, the .300 Winchester Magnum has a neck which too short (.278" versus .318" for the .308 Norma Magnum; the .30-.338 is .299) In my book, a cartridge neck needs to be at least as long as the caliber of the bullet it shoots.

In a single shot target rifle, where loading to fit the magazine is not an issue, the .300 Winchester Magnum achieved a certain reputation at 1000 yards. Both the Army and the Marine Corps rifle teams used it in the 60's and 70's, but it is rarely seen on the firing line these days, where 6.5 and 6mm bullets reign supreme.

My favorite long range rifle in Africa was and is the .300 H&H, but were I to opt for a shorter cartridge, it would be a .308 Norma Magnum, not the .300 Winchester Magnum.

There are quite a few people that also say the same about the 458WM, and that the 458Lott is what the 458WM should have been.

I would agree with that, except my vote would be for the predecessor of the .458 Lott, the .450 Watts.

The Watts was a good one. Straightened out .375H&H Mag brass. Was a decent shooter.

I 1972 I shot a presentation grade Pre-64 Winchester that was factory chambered for the Watts by Winchester. According to the owner, they were the first rounds fired from it. 4 shots split the beautiful stock - too bad. The ammo was loaded with 600gr. Barnes solids but I don't remember the load.

The only difference between the Lott and the Watts is the sloping chamber of the Lott, so there isn't an edge to scrape the bullets fired from a .458 Win Mag round.

With handloads using today's powders, the .458 meets the factory Lott ballistics.

John Buhmiller opined that in order to get decent accuracy out of .458 WM cartridges fired in a .450 Watts chamber, the twist needed to be reduced to something like 22 inches.

My Watts, on a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 action, has a 22 inch twist and digests .458 WM ammunition with no ill effects. My Watts also has a recoil lug on the barrel, and the stock has withstood a great many full loads (but no 600 grain Barnes loads).

Also, the Lott helped sort out the feeding issues that some rifle makes experienced.

"probably" is the operative word, does that imply it may be possible ? if so I´ll go the Salma Hayek route too though a 1950´s Sophia Loren or a 1970´s Joanna Lumley would work ! best

Since I have a 375 Weatherby and a 500 Jeffery, I'd like to change my vote to a nice vintage Southgate 300 Weatherby built on an FN Mauser action.
