CZ .404 Jeffrey?
      #17389 - 29/07/04 01:06 PM

I have heard that at the 2005 SHOT show, CZ plans to introduce their new .404 Jeffrey, as well as the .505 Gibbs and .450 Rigby, but that they are going to be kind of expensive, like about $1800.00. Has anyone else heard this? Is this true? That would be cool, but dang, you could still build one cheaper, I think.

Ray,
With CZ making a 404 next year, do you think that they would offer replacement barrels at a reasonable price for a conversion? Also do you think that factory ammo will ever come back like the 405 win.?

Hauptjaeger, I think that factory .404 should become available, I just don't think it has been announced yet who will make it. I am thinking that a replacement barrel, if you could buy one, would unfortunately be expensive, since the rifle itself will be so expensive, but I don't know, we shall see. I wish they could just make a 550 in .404, for the same price as any other 550.

Well the CZ 404 Jefferys and 505 Gibbs or 500 Jefferys is on the market now as we speak and they intend to produce ammo for them I understand...

Will posted something about seeing them on the shelves where he lives the other day...

It is the time of the 2nd coming; or rather I should say the commercial rebirth of the 404. When the ammo hits the shelves across America that will be a great day for a great round.

All I know is what I heard about cost but I doubt you can build one for $1800.

My .416 Mod. 70 cost me about ~$2300 for a plain Jane conversion.

Action including selling the take-off parts $600.
New Barrel/chambered $400
Bluing $200
New sights $125, installing myself.
McMillan stock $600
New bottom metal $350

I imagine they need that sort of pricing to make them commercially viable.

I am sure the market will bear the price for those calibres.

It is similar to comparing the 35 Whelen and 375 H&H. The problem with the 35 Whelen is there are some real 35 Whelen fans but the 35 Whelen won't support 375 type prices for ammo and rifles. Hence, the 35 Whelen is dead even though it has more potential users than the 375 H&H.

I have my CZ550 custom 404 Jefferys priced to sell at $2200. on the AR classified...You cannot build one for that price..Its a nice gun with Lothar Walther barrel, English style stock, barrel band front sight and swivel, talley/Brockman QD rings and bases with a pop up peep when the scope comes off...Receiver was surface ground and bases hand fitted, steel grip cap...Real nic gun that shoots everything I have tried into an inch....

A CZ "improved" Mauser action married to the .404 Jeffrey?

Okay, where do I get in line?

By the way, will the CZ .404s have the same stock dimensions as CZ's 550 in .375 H&H? Anyone know?

I visited the CZ-USA web site today and saw the SC 550 (Safari Classic) rifles with basic dimensions but not prices. The 505 Gibbs weighs 11 lbs and comes with a mercury recoil reducer. The 404 and 450 are 10 lbs.

A question for everyone: Which of these three would you choose and why?

.505 Gibbs, of course!! Because I can!!!!

Second choice would be the .416 Rigby.

I'll go for the 404 Jeffreys. Reason: recoil. Think about the wiplash your neck gets everytime you fire a shot, possible tearing of the retina and how quickly after the shot you will have your riffle back on target.

For the past two months I was struggling to decide between a 416 Rigby and a 404 Jeffreys. After a lot of discussions with my friends at the SA bigbore ass. and watching slow motion videos I decided on the 404Jeffreys. There are very little difference in the balistics.Thats only my opinion.

450 Rigby.

Brass and bullet availability. Also, I know from owing two 460 Wbys in the past that the 450 Rigby case will be able to deliver top accuracy with a variety of reduced loads that do not require fillers. In fact it would be better than the 460 with reduced loads because it does not have the huge freeebore of the 460

However, if the rifle was a Purdey or H&H etc then I would take 505 Gibbs.

404 for me would be out because of bullets and I think the 404 needs to be in the right rifle to make it all worthwhile.

Lastly, the 450 Rigby is not a classic cartridge and a jazzed up CZ is not a classic rifle and that coupled with all the bullets in 45 and being able to use 416 Rigby brass would make the 450 Rigby an easy choice for me.

Mike
