Anyone see this before? http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4597211.pdf

It's an inertia activated rear sight that theoretically makes it unnecessary to regulate a double. I can see all sorts of shortcomings, most revolving around the tiny intricate parts to some degree. Also, given that most doubles are two trigger / extractor propositions specificly to avoid problems with such delicate parts, even more delicate ones working on the same principal aren't likely to find much favor. I may see some advantage for the man who would like to ocassionally shoot slugs in a shotgun but for a rifle??? Well, it is interesting any way.

Hi Oupa,

As it was invented in Australia and Remington was the American arm of the patent, I personally have never seen this device.. EVER ...

You would not want it to fail in the bush with all those small parts but it is an idea but I have never heard of it until now.

Thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas,

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

"all providing 2 adjustable sight leaves, one for each barrel"

Kinda indicates the mechanics are for 'marketing' and the 2 sight leaves, one adjusted for each barrel takes care of regulation - much like a typical Kodiak muzzleloader, which has little or no regulation - & 2 adjustable sights, 1 sight for each barrel.

This was the method most used in the States for regulation of double barreled muzzleloaders, in around the mid 1800's as well, except that usually each set of sights were mounted on the top of each respective barrel. - reference "Firearms of the American West 1802-1865".

Such a delicate contraption imho has no place on a real, hunting dr! Apparently the two sight leaves are changed by inertia by firing the first shot. In case of a misfire the wrong leaf will still be up for the left barrel. A little bit of dust or hardened oil will certainly stop it's proper function, so one day you will be shooting at an enraged animal with the wrong barrel and/or sight leaf, or, worse, with both leaves out of function because chnging stopped halfway. Just another bright idea the world doesn't need!
