BSA CF2 Rifle

I have an opportunity to purchase a BSA North American Model CF2 rifle in .243 Win. caliber. This rifle is in excellent condition, and is priced at $475, including scope. I wonder if anyone here has experience with these rifles and can give me an informed opinion...

G'Day Fella's,

Carpetsahib, to be perfectly honest, the BSA CF2 was nothing special (gee, aren't we all so spoilt for choice these days)!
They only came in one action length, for every cartridge from .222 to belted magnums, and because of this they ended up being a bit big and heavy.

I hope I'm not raining on your parade, with the above comments!

The CF2 rifles usually don't bring big dollars, but they are sturdy, reliable rifles, if in good condition.
They are a push feed action with a long guide rib on the bolt, and they feature a brass cocking indicator on the top of the bolt shroud.
These rifles tend to be a bit heavy, but the couple I've known were VERY accurate.
I commenced shooting for a living back in the late 1970's with a CF2 in .243 Win, and it was an extremely accurate rifle.
I bought another CF2 in .270 Win in the early 1980's and it was an awesome shooter as well.
A mate had one in .222 Rem and it was also a great shooter.

Homer and 4seventy, thanks for the comments. I agree that the rifle is heavy and has some features that are questionable. But I like the feel of the action and guessed that the accuracy potential is probably pretty good. I am without a .243 at present and may just give this one a go.

If it's in good condition I doubt you'll be dissapointed. The trigger is not as good as the early Majestics, due to the cost cutting implimented by the darned accountants, the CF2 was a simplified version of the Monarch again to make it cheaper. Lady Docker had about bankrupt the BSA company with her Hollywood lifestyle and the Monte Carlo casino trips. She even had the front wings of her Bently Gold plated.

I digress................. I have a CF2 in 7x57 (one of only 389 made in that chambering according the John Knibbs book) and a CF2 Stitzen in 270. The 270 was the first rifle I ever brought and it has BSA's DBL sett trigger mechanism. The 7x57 has the std single blade adjustable one. Of course the CF2 was made to accept the same moutns as the Rem 700 to cater to the US market.

CF2's have hammer forged barrels with 5 grooves LH twist. Oh and yes if you over tighten the bedding screws it can splay the alloy of the bottom metal. If this is the case it's not a disaster as you can make up some steel top hat shaped plugs and bore the alloy to acept them and so spread the load. I had to do that on an old CF2 in 22/250 I picked up about 15 years ago. The 22/250 was sold when Bisley refused to allow it's use on their ranges due to the velocity exceeding the new range certificate !

Great information! I will probably work up a deal this coming week. I think this rifle could benefit from some slight stock modifications; namely, shortening the forend to about 8" and trimming up the contours a bit. Also, perhaps fit it with a smaller, lighter scope than it presently possesses. If it were restocked, then different bottom metal could be fabricated; I don't admire the oval aluminum plate which comprises the present configuration.

Oh I forgot to point out just how smooth the bolt operation is on the CF2's don't know how I missed that. Not quite the same as a Schoenauer but getting close. This is my 7x57:-

Of course as pointed out they only have one action length but the Stutzen is a 270 and the other a 7x57 so it does not notice much at all.

Brithunter, you are right about the smoothness of the action. There are a lot of features about this rifle that I like, and few that I don't. That being said, I plan to make an effort to acquire this specimen in the near future.
