A deformed ele cow

Here's a picture and info from an e-mail I received from our member JB. His photobucket account is acting up, so I uploaded it for him.

I just got an article from the magazine "Connoissance de la chasse" that has to be quoted.

A THWARTED COW

October 2010
PH Philippe Clero, Tawisa, Tanzania is stalking a herd of buffalos close to Kibaoni camp, Selous, when he heart sort of a din and decided to divert toward the puzzling racket
He bumped onto a small herd of elephants and expecially this cow that he didn't know. She seems to be 25- 30 years old and didn't look handicapped by her distorted tusk. She isn't meager and looks just normal, not famished at all
Since then, he observed another young female with this sort of anomality.
The cause ? genetics or a trauma when young?

I have seen some distortet tusks throughout various African countries, but have always suspected it was from some sort of damage while they were young.

I don't see a problem.

Since the other one is going the other way, don't they sort of balance each other out?

Thanks for posting, Erik, really interesting pic.

This is one of those times when a freak of nature is rather nice.

i was hunting in the Binga district, Zimbabwe in '05 for two weeks. in that time we saw three elephants with little or no trunks whatsoever. i ended up shooting this bull PAC, which was knocking over huts and destroying grain bins. missing two + feet off the end of its trunk. poachers snairs!

Elephant in that area have often short trunks due to Poacher snares. I have seen two with short trunks, including this one.
