ammo costs
      #172873 - 10/12/10 02:42 PM

I’ve been keeping records of the costs of the reloading components that I add to my inventory, and have worked out how much each round costs for the rifle cartridges that I own (as I buy new stuff the price goes up – earlier low prices “shandy” the costs down). Here is what it currently costs me per bang for my more popular loads, in order of ascending cost (reloads unless otherwise indicated):

458WM: 44c (405gn Westcasting lead, 1000fps)
8mm: 48c (ex-mil range round “ready rolled”)
8mm: 52c (range round)
308Win: 59c (range rounds, my hunting loads would be more)
458WM: 63c (500gn Westcasting lead, 1600fps)
30/06: 66c
8mm: 78c (hunting load)
375H&H: $1.17 (350gn Taipans)
375H&H: $1.60 (300gn or 350gn Woodleighs)
458WM: $1.69 (400gn Woodleigh PP)
458WM: $1.73 (325gn Hornady)
458WM: $1.73 (500gn Woodleigh PP)
375H&H: $2.43 (300gn Barnes)
458WM: $2.58 (500gn Woodleigh FMJ)

Hi Mauserand9mm,

I must admit that I have never costed it that way but then I guess I don't shoot as much as you.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I like to stock up and when I make a purchase I try and buy more than I need, like it's the only cartridge I own - which isn't the case but helps keep me in components for some time.

A few years ago I bought 600 Highlander 8mm projectiles for $120 (the minimum order was 500 but they came in packs of 200) - that's $20 a hundred!! Dirt cheap even then, and they shoot like stink - very accurate, but only a range round really (198gn FMJ BT). Now they have stopped bringing them in small quantities (low demand, 8mm is not a popular calibre here, as you may know) and minimum order quantity is 10,000. That's too much for me. Someone is bringing them in now but they are around normal projectile prices.

G'Day Fella's,

Mauser & 9mm, thank you for the insight into reloading cost per round.
I probably could have done with out that but there is no escaping reality!

Reloading really is a great hobby!

Doh!
