Leica Rifle scope. How are they?
      #172843 - 10/12/10 12:35 AM

Hi all

I like Leica binoculars a lot. But, how are the new line from them with rifle scopes? How are they holding up when comparing them to the rest from high quality German/Austrian optic?

Cheers all, Vegard_dino

Hi Vegard, I have a "Leica" scope on my custom .22. Leica actually never made scopes (at least since 1950), they were made for them by Leupold and branded Leica. The quality is the same, IMO as a leupold VXII or III, i.e. very good, best, Mike

Hi

Thanks for the information.

Oh, so they do not make these new scopes either?

From what I understand, that's true for previous offerings (made with Zeiss glass?). But the latest versions, the ER 2.5-10 & ER 3.5-14, are made in Germany.

I'm interested to hear how these perform as well. They are in the magnification range I like and if they are like their rangefinders, good value for my $'s.

The only thing I have seen on the new Leica scopes was a review in one of the NRA publications (American Hunter, probably). I'm sure Leica is building a quality product but I always have a hard time trusting the objectivity of magazine reviews.

Like others, I love my Leica binoculars and rangefinder. The investment in binos was tough to swallow, but I feel good about spending that money every time I look through another brand.

Here's the on-line version of the NRA's Leica scope review I mentioned:

Well,

since about 1 year or so Leica makes their own rifle scopes - the quality is medium and there are not technical advantages over "other" competitors - and last not least: the design is not yet time proven. Leica has knowledge in building fine binos, cameras and so on, but if their scopes will test the test of time when a .4xx caliber or anything else bumps 2000times and more with it´s recoil against it, must be shown first.

My recomendation would be strongly Swarovski´s scopes instead: their optics is more crisp clear and brilliant, they have advanatges like SR-rail mount or illuminated reticles or the ballistic turrent - and they are in the same price range or compared to the technical benefits maybe even a bit cheaper (Z3 and Z5 lines)!

Just my 2 cents, but I deal daily with them both, so trust me - on my rifles there will be definetly a Swarovski and nothing else!
