Bison hunt?
      #172669 - 06/12/10 12:06 AM

Hello Folks,

There are lots of ads for bison hunts, but where the information is available, it appears that the animals are farm stock.

Are there any wild bison in the United States that are legal to hunt?

Tom;

I don't know of any. Even if there are, they aren't "wild" in the sense that no matter what the marketing material says, they are barnyard cattle-like whether in corrals or open.

This is how it's put to me by friends and acqaintances who have hunted them {shot them} under a variety of conditions.

I wanted an open range-type hunt for years but finally resigned myself to the fact that the kill will probably be no different than that which occurs in the common 100-500 acre paddock. I would go for such a hunt for the HUNT; camping, scenery, country, etc. but frankly would not be too interested in paying a premium for the animal under those conditions.

If you really want a wild experience, I think there is some northern Canada opportunity that looks very interesting. Not sure the details but somebody posted here once and it looked really neat.

BTW; I know quite a number of folks around here that shoot bison every year or every other year for their meat supply. Cost used to be very reasonable; $700 as of 2 years ago. Pretty cheap meat for a 800-1200 lb animal. Now the prices have jumped and when I called last {3 or so months ago} the feedlot hunts were running $1200-$1400.

I'll just keep feeding our steer...

look here for non-resident wild bison hunting.
http://gf.state.wy.us/
the hunts in my area are conducted on the national elk refuge and grand teton park. thoroughly regulated and supervised. don't know the odds of drawing a tag but success rate is high. generally quite open ground or riverine habitat.
might be info about public land hunts in the rest of the state.
there are several options for private land/herd hunts in eastern wyoming but my knowledge is limited to what i see on the internet.
not sure if open to non-resident, but i've heard about wood bison hunting in canada as well.
good luck

You can also check with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. There's tags for buffalo outside of the park (Yellowstone). All the info ,dates, applying for tags etc. is on their website.

I'll respectfully disagree with that. Check out information on the Henry Mountains herd in Utah, which was for many years the only bison eligible for Boone & Crockett entry (because other "herds" were raised/hunted in the manner you mentioned). From what I can tell, bison hunts in Arizona are also pretty challenging. The rub on either of those is getting drawn for the hunt...I've got 8 points towards a Utah hunt and I won't even begin trying to get a tag until I've got 4 more.

I do agree, however, that there are far, far more pen-raised slaughters than wild hunts when you're talking about American bison.

9.3 is correct - the draw buffalo hunt here is on open range (crown land) & is for wild animals. They've never been in a corral & have been 'wild' all their lives. Many guys get skunked on buffalo, as the bufflo migrate and if they happen to be on private land while you are there - you either pay the piper (rancher) or could be on someone's land who doesn't allow hunting and you run your hunting weeks out while waiting for them to vacate that land to somewhere where you can hunt. Most of the land up there is private - most of the ranchers have a day fee.

There is a ranch near Pink Mountain, I think, that has 'pet' bison, who charges only for room and board - not for one of their buffalo. I don't know what those 'rates' are nor how to find them. I've been told it's a 'canned' hunt ie; after you pay for room and board, you drive up to a corral and shoot a buffalo - whoopee! what a hunt! They handle gutting and skinning - included. Easy way for 1,000 punds of meat - IF they let you shoot a bug bull - ?????

The Alaska herds are wild. Permits for the ones near the road system are hard to get with the drawing. But there are a couple herds off the road system that will be ALOT harder to get to that are still open to hunt w/o permits IIRC.

There's a herd up in the Fairwell burn area and another in the Copper River basin as well as the Delta herd.

There are also several smaller herds that are domestic just walk down if the field and blast away. They'll drag them out with a tractor. (if that's what floats your boat.)
