458 Lott rifle chambered to 460 Weatherby Magnum.
      #171871 - 22/11/10 07:53 PM

Hello friends, I always turning to the head. Well I like my 458 Lott but as I read about the 460 Weatherby Magnum cartridge, the more I'm enjoying it. The point is that I have the rifle Ceska Safari Magnum 550 in 458 Lott, and I wonder if it could technically speaking, recalibrate the rifle cartridge 458 Lott to the cartridge 460 Weatherby Magnum and if this task in your country is very expensive.

Thanks,

Oscar.

Yes, it can be done.

A. Ream the chamber, open the bolt face and open the extractor. That is the easy part.

B. Then open the rails and (perhaps) adjust the ramp angle to achieve reliable feeding. This is the hard part.

Many gunsmiths can do part A. properly. Few can do part B. properly.

A slightly easier conversion would be to take a CZ in 416 Rigby and rebarrel to 460 wby. The bolt is nearly right (just tighten the extractor a bit). Screw on the new barrel and check headspace. Then open the rails a small amount. However, this causes you to have the expense of a new barrel.

I think I'll stick with the 458 Lott, wich is also powerful. I have no money to spend on the gun chambered equal to or more than a new weapon.

Thanks for the reply,

Oscar.

I think a lot of PHs would probably tell you that the .458 Lott is the better and more versatile weapon anyway, particularly if you use factory ammo.

The velocity achieved by the .460 WBY is beyond impressive, but perhaps also beyond what is practical and useful, making the gun somewhat harder to handle.

I am not a bolt action guy but if you want something "bigger" than a .458 Lott and you need to buy a new rifle to get there, I would probably just go for a CZ in .505 Gibbs. Just my $.02.

Hi Hunter_angler:

The problem is that I can not afford a new rifle. Here in Spain the Ceska Safari Classic, the 505 Gibbs, not sold as the 505 Gibbs cartridge is prohibited, as our law considers it a war, being a 12.7 mm gauge pod slot and have, like us prohibit the 500 Jeffery for the same reason. Also the price of rifles (over 2000 euros) is beyond me. I'm trying to make a change, my Ceska the 458 Lott, more RCBS dies, plus a Ruger GP100 revolver, plus a Bushnell Elite 3200 with mounts and rings for a Weatherby Mark V of a friend in the powerful 460 Weatherby. Just out badly but sometimes do not reason with this weapons.

Thanks,

Oscar.

Hola Oscar,

I have a friend who sells a good 460 Weatherby Mag. with a scope and a long barrel with a muzzle brake for a good price (below 1500 Euros)

My 460 Weby has a 24" barrel and a removable muzzle brake, and for hunting I would get rid of the brake!
Let me add that I am not shooting original Weatherby ballsitics (500grs bullet at 2600fps), but a reduced load with 500grs at 2350 fps (like the Lott), which is also a very precise load.

So, here is my serious invitation:
Come to Germany/Bavaria/Munich, shoot both Weatherbies, and, if you want and like: buy the rifle of my friend.
(I assume that you have a permit for buying and importing the rifle to Spain)

Sometimes you have to make youself a nice chrismas present...

best regards
Rolf

I would be a change, the 458 Lott Ceska the 460 Weatherby. I now I can not spend money, or a rifle, or the trip to Germany. I would really like. Impossible.

Oscar.

Yes, if you handload or buy custom ammo you can have a lot of flexibility with the .460 WBY. The nice thing about the Lott is that you can also chamber .458 WIN, giving you versatility with available factory ammunition.

Ovny, since the .500 NE is OK in Spain (I checked in Madrid) I am surprised the .500 Jeffrey and the .505 Gibbs are not allowed ??? Would it be that they are used in magazine rifles or is your info incorrect, best, Mike (p.s. you nearly gave me a heart attack since my new rifle is in .500 NE)

p.s. do you have a rifle range in Madrid, if so on my next trip up there I will bring a few rifles and we can go and put some ordnance down

Hi the problem is that both the 500 Jeffery and 505 Gibbs have rimmles sheath, but the 500 Nitro Express has sheath tab. I fail to We understand the difference, or if you have to do with the 50 caliber BMG or whatever. In Madrid it is difficult to find areas where you can try shooting rifles. I do in the field which is illegal, so I risk a fine.

Oscar, we have a hunter here in New Zealand who hunts in Africa quite often and writes about his adventures in our national Guns and Hunting magazine. He has just returned from Zimbabwe after hunting and shooting two elephant on his own with just some native trackers. He has a Brno 458 Win which he used for some years before converting it to a 458 Lott and using it on buffalo. This last trip on elephant he had rechambered the Brno to 458 Express, using the full 3” length belted case.

He comments that even the Lott is a little short on capacity needing some powder compression and not using the full magazine length. The 458 Express can be loaded easily to Lott specifications without powder compression and neatly fits the magazine length.

This successful hunter thinks the 458 Express is the ideal cartridge for the big Brno and just the medicine for buffalo and elephant.

Hello, I asked an armorer of Spain if he could recharbered my rifle to 458 Express and he said to me that the cartridge is subject to patent and that it is not catalogued in Spain, therefore it would be an illegal cartridge.

Thanks for his answer,

Oscar.

I'm not so sure that the 425 Express is under patent as the NZ hunter bought his own chamber reamer and had the conversion done here in New Zealand (as I read it from his hunting stories). Maybe in Spain you have more restrictive laws than we do. Here we can make any cartridge we like and chamber a legal firearm for it. Even 50cal Browning.

Here is a link for some information on the 425 Express.
