Will be trying my M03 Africa PH with 404 Jeffery barrel out in a weeks time on buffalo in NT. I'll let you know how it performs. I've had the barrel on and off a few times now and return to zero has been spot on.

My new and second Mauser M03 purchased from an NE member. Funny thing, I sold him a barrel and later bought the rifle off him, an Alpine M03 model, without the barrel. Hasn't arrived yet.

Will make it handy, to carry an M03 in .404 and say another in 8x68S.

I may re-stock this rifle with a new custom stock in classic English modern style. Will decide when it arrives and probably much later than that.

BTW was impressed with my existing Extreme stocked M03 in .404 prior to the BGRC Nationals at Monarto this month. Never shot it with the open sights before so tested it out the night before on my home paddock range, using a flashlight to light up the target, and a head torch to light up the sights ... not the best conditions.

Used a set of 'shooting sticks' as a standing rest and fired off a couple of 400 gr rounds at about 50 metres distance to the target. Kicks more than my .450. Checked the target ... one bloddy hole only. Had a good look at it and yes it could be two bullet holes. Fired off a third and yep less than a half inch from the other hole(s). Almost exactly 10 cm down and 10 cms to the right. Adjusted for the difference during the Group 2 competition shoot. Sadly to say, the results were not as good as the test shots, but also no shooting sticks. Either sitting or off hand shots only. Didn't do too badly probably half way through the score rankings or thereabouts.

But very happy with the results from the test shoot.

Be good if Mauser made a 500 Jeffery barrel for the M03 ,maybe they think it would cut into sales of their M98 500 Jeffery ?, there was a fellow on AR, a German who was getting some German gunsmith to make up a 500 Jeffery barrel for his M03 ,the hardest part being cutting the locking lug recesses into the barrel ,i dont know if anyone in Aust would do it

I dont think it's sales of the M98 they are worried about but instead sales of the R8 in .500 J. The apparent flipside is that Blaser wont chamber the R8 in .404.

Any pics of the BGRC Nationals posted eleswhere?

.458 Lott is the largest chambering available currently.

Yes a .500 Jeffery would be an excellent addition. The barrel might be thicker again, and perhaps require an even wider barrel channel than the .404 and presumably .458 barrels.

.416 Remington Magnum is another choice.
