anyone have blueprints?
      #170513 - 29/10/10 06:55 AM

Hello to all, I am new to this whole forum thing, and this is my 3rd post ever, (Posted two in the humor section as a test)

I have fallen in lust with double rifles, but being a little short on funds, am unable to afford one at the present time. However I am a very talented machinist, and decided that I will build my own. I just need plans for an action. I figure this will be both an education and a fun journey full of cuss words and bloody fingers, and will probably cost more than just buying one, so I figured it would be perfect for me!

Here is what I want to build; a double hammer gun, with a Jones under lever, and double triggers. I want it to be chambered in something that I am going to use, and not expensive to shoot, but having a little history to it as well. The venerable 30-30 Winchester fit’s the bill to a “T”. Good on dangerous deer to 150 yards, and will stop a charging raccoon at 5 paces with a well placed brain shot.

So… does anyone have blue prints (machinist drawings) for an action like this? Any info on heat treating and type of steels to use would be helpful as well.

Welcome castlead!
A couple of members here have built hammerless actions from scratch, not sure if anyone has done a hammered action though.
There is plenty of knowledge and expertise regarding building doubles on this forum, so you have come to the right place.
Looking forward to hearing all about your project as it comes together, so please keep us informed.

Welcome. You have stumbled upon in my opion the most experienced group in cyberspace regarding this passion. My own present project is a sidelock hammer gun converted to .30-30Win.! Not as talented or ambitious though I started with an existing shotgun action... well, most of one anyway. Maybe someone can provide the drawings you seek but if not reverse engineering is pretty straight forward if you can get your hands on even an ancient shotgun of the type desired. Even lacking that the mechanics of a double gun are not all that complicated... until you try putting it together at least, and a rudimentary understanding of what's needed can be arrived at from even crude sketches and very different action styles. Unless you are a purist who seeks to exactly replicate a specific firearm I think you'll be able to work it out. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress!

Castlead,

Your best bet will be to buy an old action and reverse engeneer it. The Jones underlever is pretty simple once you see it in detail, and if you don't make it with self cocking locks, you have a very simple action.

Steel of choice would be 8620. Plan on case hardening it after engraving. There are several shops that you can send it to for color case hardening, Doug Turnbull being at the head of the pack.

Lock parts such as springs, sears, firing pins and some screws I make from 1084 steel.

You can build a 30-30 on a nice petite action that will feel alive.

I wish I knew of a source for machinist drawings. Would have saved me hundereds of hours. Lots if inexpensive shotguns here to use as a pattern though.

Best of luck!!

Thanks for the info guys, I shall track down an old shotgun action and reverse engineer. I will keep you posted on my progress as it happens. But right now I am going to be out of action for a couple of months, as I am in the middle of moving to the other side of the country. It is amazing how much crap one accumulates when you settle down for a few years! Castlead out!

SAE 8620 is a great choice. It happens to be the steel that is used for Constant Velocity Joints (Outer Races, Inner Races and Cages). After case hardening to a depth of .008 to .010 in., the parts become extremely wear resistant and tough.

Just remember that all shotgun actions are not created equal.

There is a good article in Shooting Sportsman ( Sept or Oct issue) by Vic Venters on smoking in barrels "on the circle". It illustrates the major points to consider in fitting barrels to the action. While it is certainly true that not all guns are created equal, the article shows where a little more material can be added to increase strength of the action and make it suitable for a rifle.

The same issue has an article by Steven Huges illustrating a box lock action. Another good reference for technical information is "Shotgun technicana" by McIntosh.

A 30-30 won't stress many actions, but the better it is built, the more generations get to enjoy it.

Castlead,
Check the black powder section for a maker that uses the handle "cowboycs" (I think). I believe that he made a Jones under lever gun. either a single or a double. Not sure but he should be able to answer your questions.
