Dakota Model 10 - Early Actions any Better or Worse?
      #168606 - 28/09/10 12:19 AM

I read through what I could find on here about the Dakota Model 10 action. It doesn't seem to get star-studded reviews, but I might be able to pick up someone's unfinished project (an action, hardware, and semi-inletted stock) for a decent price.

This particular action is apparently circa 1992 or 1993. Just wondering if much has changed in the way these are designed or made over the last 15 years? From the reviews it sounds like I should expect a not-so-great trigger...what other faults are out there?

My understanding is that they had a reputation for breaking firing pins and that they have extractors only (not ejectors). The latter I could live with... The trigger also sucks.
However, I do not know if this is still the case or how easily these things can be resolved. They sure look nice though.... it all depends on the deal I suppose.

I started sub assembling these from rough machined parts in Dec '92. They had a pile of parts that took a lot of fitting. "A lot" is an understatement. I spent 6-8 months working the metal on these then moved into the stock shop and was the only one stocking these for what seemed like forever. The quality of trigger is very dependent on the quality of the stock inletting. The action flexes with through bolt tension and this changes the trigger weight. Leaving the wood where it's supposed to be is very important.

These make a fine little rifle when done well and a can of worms when not.

Don't remember many action only's that went out with a semi inlet.

If the serial # has an "S" in front of it, that means it was a scrapped action that was sold to an employee. Not very many had shipped before I started there.

I can't speak to the older ones but I have one being built now. Ibought the action in the white and it's high quality from my inspection. The builder is an ex-Dakota man so he knows how to build them. The wood should be shaped for it this week.

Thanks for the comments guys. The opportunity to pick up a low serial number, in-the-white action for around $1,300 had me considering it, but I believe I'm going to pass on this project...it wasn't something that I was really excited about and money's too tight to half-heartedly enter a project.

The work is being done by Allan Mack. From the sound of it, you both worked at Dakota at the same time.

All I can offer at the moment is a picture of the stock blank. Its a magnum action that is being built in 375H&H.

Yes I worked with Allan and his brother. Couple of world class machinists. I just didn't know Allan was whittling wood now.

Actually, Allan isn't doing wood work himself. Mark Latza (I think I have the last name right) works for him as his stock maker.
