J&W Tolley Rifle Age?
      #168413 - 25/09/10 04:38 AM

Can any of the more knowledgable out there help me with
the age of a J&W Tolley double rifle? S/n 6547 and it
is a A&D boxlock, toplever. It is marked with the A&D
2420 patent use number, so given that I'm thinking it was
made around 1880 or so. But, I could be way off.
Thanks in advance for your help

Raff, I can't help with the age but went to the safe and checked the s/n of my two Tolley's.
My laminated steel 10 2 5/8" underlever non-rebounding 5 dram roundball gun is s/n 3335. Based on the NR hammers, 'light' charge as 10 rifles go, and short case length my best guess puts it 1875-77?

The other is a bar action top lever 318WR s/n 44121 that I guesstimate 1914-1918.

I know Tolley retailed a lot of guns, but does anyone know if any records exist? What caliaber is your rifle?

Hi Bob
I do not know who, if anyone, has the Tolley records.
This isn't my rifle, but I'm working on that. The caliber
appears to be 577/500 NO. 2. Near as I could tell from
the 5 minute look see that I have had. It's definitly not
the 3 1/8" case. Thanks for looking and I am glad I gave
you an excuse to visit your rifles. The .318 sounds like
a real treasure. Have you posted anything on it?
Thanks
Raff

J&W Tolley records were destroyed in World War II during bombing raid on Birmingham including their blueprints and Machinery.

Dandy, thanks for the information. That is really a shame.

Raff, I'm leaving on a hunting trip tomorrow for a few days but will try to get some good pictures of the 318 to post when I return.

Dandy; Thanks for the update. I guess I can stop looking
now. Too bad.

Bob, Good Hunting and thanks. I look forward to seeing it.
