I recently picked up this Steyr Mannlicher.
It wasn't advertised as a Gibbs, but I wonder...
The "B' prefix serial is a Gibbs thing isn't it?
How about the sights? Look kinda Gibbs to me...

G'day Huvius, a few of these are owned by mates of mine. The first has a serial No with an " A " prefix and is believed to be retailed by Purdey. The next has a serial No with a " B " prefix and is believed to be retailed by Gibbs. It is a take down and exhibits a lot more file work than yours. A third has marks on it which has lead us to believe it went through the hands of Rigby. I think you're on the right track in regard to where yours came from and they all handle wonderfully.

Commenting on the sights, I agree it is very much "Gibbs" and for all practical purposes identical to the sight bases on a Gibbs Farquharson I have.

IMHO Huvius' rifle is a typical Gibbs "old model" Mannlicher sporter. Gibbs imported these in military configuration and sporterized them. Those sold directly by Gibbs have the gibbs adress on the barrels, those retailed by others are often unsigned, but all carry a B-prefix serial number. My own three Gibbs Mannlichers show the same front sight base and many others I know share a distinctive stock style, resembling the Gibbs Farquarsons.

A Mannlicher B3085, dated "Steyr 1899", barrel signed by Gibbs.


A Modell 1900, B3452, dated "Steyr 1901" unsigned, retailer's # A808. Barreled action only salvaged from a junkpile, restocked by me, not yet checkered.


M 1903, B4842, dated "Steyr 1905", signed by Gibbs

Folks ,

Here a link to a model 1892 Steyr mannlicher in 6.5 x 53R by George Gibbs . Also have one that was re-barreled by BSA in 1924 for the 303 magnum round . http://s854.photobucket.com/albums/ab101/radinej/Gibbs/

Thank you for the post , Here are the photos of the 1892 Mannlicher with the BSA target barrel in 303 Magnum . The 303 mag is so large at the base that the rifle is now essentially a single shot . The rifle is dated pre-1899 . Jim

remarkable rifle, seem#s it was build as a target rifle. can you give more informations about the 303 mag cartridge? what is the basis brass for making this round today?

Folks ,


The 303 magnum round is based on the 280 Ross case or the experimental 276 military round . Jeffery introduced it in 1919 . Shortened slightly and necked up for the standard 170 grain 303 projectile . It was in production from about 1919 til 1930 or so . As you noted it was purely a target round but did generate about 3200 foot pounds at the muzzle and the rifle while now a single shot , has a full set of folding express sights . This rifle has "Special BSA Barrel with 1924 BSA Rifling" along the barrel in front of the rear sights and " 303 Magnum Ex / cordite 42 170 max" on the right side of the barrel just in front of the action . On the left side of the barrel , it states " 303 Magnum cartridge / weight under 3 pounds 4 ounces " . I suspect this was a British NRA weight class . I wrote to them got a reply but no information on the classes . The sight is a Lyman base , stem , with a BSA diopter disk .

I have the official way of making the round from slightly shortened 280 Ross brass with the grains of cordite x 1.19 = grains of Reloder 15 . The much less expensive , but home engineered is to get a set of reloading dies from CH4D in Ohio and re-shape 7 mm Remington Mag brass . The belt is the same diameter as the 303 mag base and trim the brass short to the proper length . They hold up well and extract easily . So far , while I can see all the purists screaming and gasping for breath , I have reloaded some of these creations 4 - 5 times without problems and saved a lot of cash .

Specs are . . . neck 0.345 , shoulder 0.462 , base 0.530 , rim 0.557 . case length 2.35 and overall 3.25 . There is a brief note in "Cartridges of the World" 10th edition page 369 .

The Gibbs in the photos I posted is very effective on white tail . It is the 6.5 x53R that I load with 160 grain round nose and 40 grains of N-560 . It gives me about 2300 feet per second and 1800 or so foot pounds . Not too bad for an 1893 dated rifle . Light weight to carry in the woods . Jim

I do, sometimes, mostly roe deer and sus scrofa.My load: 38gr N160 behind a 160gr Hornady RN.

A matter of photography: The restocked M1900 looks less blonde, more reddish in reality. The original Gibbs finishes I have seen so far are usually very dark, almost black, with just a reddish tint.
