The standby is 65 grains of IMR 4831 with just about any 286 grain bullet.

If you're partial to RL-15 there is a load listed here that is pretty good also but you're going to have to search fo it. I'm very satisfied with the IMR powders.

If you've got the #1 in 9.3X74R make sure that you never get them mixed up! The Ruger will take much hotter loads than the D/R will.

Philip,

Welcome to the world of Double Rifles, and congratulations on your purchase.

Try a search of the double rifle reloading forum, using the reference

9.3x74R

You should get some results. If not re-post, as there SHOULD be reloading data on that cartridge in the reloading forum. I have a 9.3x74R and have a load, but use Aussie Mulwex ADI powder. Also it has adjustable regulation so I adjusted the barrels to suit the accurate load, instead of the other way around.

The fellow I know who has one swears by black powder loads.

I believe this is the first time in my 73 yrs that I've ever read or heard of anyone ever using black powder in a 9.3X74R cartridge! Since it was never loaded with black powder but was a smokeless cartridge from its inception. In a double rifle I doubt it would develope enough speed, or recoil to shoot to the regulation of the rifle, since all double rifles were regulated with smokeless powder to around 2360 fps with a 286 gr bullet! This is just a thought but the 9.3X74R cartridge is NOT a black powder cartridge!
Do you have any idea what every posessed him to use black powder, and what kind of results did he get?

Why would someone use Black powder in a 9.3X74??? I don't think you can get enough velocity to get it to regulate. Just Why??
