Fred Wells Mauser/Mannlicher Action
      #167078 - 01/09/10 06:04 AM

I recently stumbled across an article that mentioned an action designed by Fred Wells based on a Mauser bolt and a Mannlicher-Schönauer rotary magazine. I can't seem to find that much about it and would like to know if anyone is currently making rifles based on it.

What a wonderful, whimsical article.....

I love the idea of a Mauser / Mannlicher as I surely love both designs and own some wonderful examples of each. They provide me so much intrinsic pleasure they should almost be classed as controlled substances (I said almost).

I wander though, the Mannlicher magazine works with the cartridge and bullet shape it was designed for, often the 6.5x54 may not feed well or at all with some short pointy bullets. Can this sort of thing limit the versatility of the grand old Mauser by limiting what bullet the cartridge can use?

Still, I guarantee you if someone built the darn thing I'd buy one just to have it.

Finally got to talk to Rube Wells. There was only one of these actions made, and that one was by Fred Wells. Doesn't sound like the Wells have any plans to pursue such a venture. I did see the one that Fred had built. It is quite an interesting piece. So, to answer your question, no, that is not the action you are looking for. Sorry it took so long to get you your answer.
