Remington/Baikal Stock Question
      #166497 - 20/08/10 12:34 AM

I have plans of doing something with the stock on my 30-06 side by side. Perhaps someone here could provide guidance before I destroy something. My biggest problem is the pistol grip. I have contemplated adding wood and re-shaping to make a full pistol grip stock. Is this something that sounds feasible?

I have other ideas regarding the stock but this seems to be the most complex for me. I have communicated with a gentlemen in Washington State that does what is called a grain enhancement and his work appears to almost cover up seams where wood has been added.

His website is www.larsongunart.com

Has anyone had any experience with this gentleman. I have spoken with him on the phone and he seems know whats he talking about.

Thanks in advance.

WCF

I'd re-shape what's there. Find some photo's of good looking stocks that would fit inside the profile of the Baikal. Since the rifle has a splinter forend, a straight grip will give better hand-eye co-ordination - more like a fine (and properly designed double) shotgun.

The one I saw localy had promise fro design changes. If I owned it, re-modeling would be the very first thing I did - even before shooting it - well, before shooting it much past testing.

Adding wood in never a good idea - it is too obvious when done correctly, and ugly to most eyes. The stocks as they are delivered are very generous, ie: oversized and can be trimmed, changed and slimmed easily.

WCF,
I re-did the stock on my Baikal over and under and had some luck in getting it to fit better than it didd before. Here are the things that bothered me the most about it as received. The stock had WAY too much wood left on it, at the head of the stock, around the trigger guard, and especially in the grip are. The main thing that was wrong with the grip is that it was too long for my hand's reach and they had left it sguared in profile.
I have not handled a side by side Baikal but I would bet that at least some of these traits carry over to your double gun. The first thing I did was to use a highly sharpened pencil to mark around the tangs and trigger guard so as to know how much wood needed to be removed. Next I rounded over the squared grip which helped with the righthand fit some. It still is too open and too long a reach for my trigger finger but I can live with it.
After getting to it fit as well as possible with what was there, I then checkered it, stained the stock, and fitted a removable cheekpiece for use with the scope. It is still just a little far to reach the front trigger comfortably, but it is much better. I have learned to pull the back trigger first as it fits me best, and save the front trigger for follow-up shots, which so far, have not been needed.
You can check out my gun and see the pictures of what I did to it by checking post number 126979, which was posted on 02/13/09. Good luck with your project. I would not try to add wood if you can avoid it. Next best thing is to have a new stock made for it. If you have the wood you should be able to get one rough inletted for around $100.00, plus your wood. Bob H.

WCF - have you also thought about getting some engraving done on the gun? After reading your post, I did some checking around and apparently there are some guys out there that do some fancy engraving on the metal (scrolls, inlay, etc.) Might be something to think about and really make your gun look good! Anybody know of somebody out there that does this, that they can recommend?

I'd like to purchase additional stocks for both my 45-70 and my 30-.06 SPR22s. Can anybody direct me to where I might purchase them? Thanks, Christopher

I'd call EAA in Fla. the importer.

I have never added wood in the area that you are talking about but I have repaired stocks in that area and I don't care how good you are it is hard to match or hide it unless it is in an area that you can cover with checkering. The more figure in the wood the better it works.

Hi all I picked up my 45/70 from Alex.We fixed my Baikal we have put proper ribs in and regulated it with my home load.Alex did the triger pulls. The next job will be the stock, I will most likley find a blank and with some help from Alex make a new stock the right shape. It is fair to say that I started with a Baikal but when I have finished it will a custom double on a baikal action.

Any chance of a working link? That one doesn't work. I'd like to see an alternative stock for a Baikal. Thanks.

I have a suggestion for your stock/engraving issues. First, I agree with all who say don't put on additional wood. Regarding recommendations, I have just receieved a Mod. 70 engraved by Paula Biesen in Spokane, WA and she did a great job. She does the engraving for the Biesen rifle shop. Her dad Roger and grandfather Al have been for years pre-eminent stockmakers of premium rifles and shotguns of the highest quality. It could be a "one-stop-shopping" for you with both stock work and engraving should you choose it. They have my recommendation without reservation and besides are great people to talk and work with.------------Bill
