Maple rifle stock

A post below from my mate in the US,it was originally for my 308 Norma magnum which is now the completed 358 Norma Magnum so I will be looking for a `98 action to commence another rifle project,I have enough sambar rifles and the thought just came into my scone that a 25-06 would be a handy cal for the smaller deer/game...hoggies,fallow etc

My mate is a very keen hunter that has hunted extensively in the US ,Canada,UK and is an amateur home schooled gunsmith stock maker and as he said to me 'its not perfect' geezus it looks bloody good to me eh!

I t`s amazing that he continued to work on this project in light of the fact that one of his son`s Dusty was killed in a prang just recently.

Dusty was a real cowboy that had a contract to capture mustangs and wild cattle out of Indian Res lands in New Mexico,I was invited to go with him one day to ride into the tail end of the Rockies for a few weeks,would have been good too..this rifle stock has that special feel of friendship to it.

I finally got off my lazy ass and completed this stock for GRYPHON.

The stock is the finest piece of fiddleback maple I ever saw. (also known as flame maple, curly maple, or tiger maple).

The chunk of wood originally came from a violin company and I ended up with it.

The stock is done in a classic design with a shadowed cheekpiece.

The checkering is done in a fleur di lis pattern with French checkering. (also known as skip-line).

Dakota Arms sling studs, a very nice blued and checkered metal grip cap, and a Pachmayer Old English recoil pad

The pictures don't do the character of the wood justice. Janet ( John W`s wife ) tried to capture the way it looks, but the pictures just can't do it justice at all.

Outstanding...reminds me of the "Hal Hartley" stocks from my home state of North Carolina

That is one very nice stock, I have always loved the Maple timber but never thought of it as a stock.

Nice stock! Blond wood stocks is certainly strikingly different than standard brown walnut finish.

Question: does John base the stock around a 98 action when he is making it? How is it bedded? Or do all these modifications occur once you fingd the action that you will use?

A 25-06 is a great calibre flexible projectile range from: 85 for varmints up to 120 game loads. I run 100 grain speer hollow points, 100 grain seirra boat tailed game kings, and 120 grain nozler partitions as my three loads for the three types of shooting that I do. Far more flexible than a 270 and a great plains calibre.

John worked it on a commercial Mauser action,now I have to find out exactly which one it was..Charles Daly,Mark X,P/Hale etc I`m buggered at this time..

Bedding and final fit to be done when barrel and calibre is finalised...264 WMag is another one that I have wanted for a long time...decisions?

I`m open to all suggestions.

As I have my original 308 NM barrel I have decided to screw her back into a suitable action.. my mind is made up,well now it is haha.

I have since spoken to John and he tells me that there are over 50 coats of hand rubbed oil on her!

He has the sister blank from the one Maple billet that he is making into a .338 WM on a Mauser platform.. this time a thumbhole. Tragically it was being made for his son Dusty that was killed recently...the rifle will be finished and sold,I would gladly buy it also if I had the spare spondula.
