32 Winchester Single Shot Worth Buying?
      #164850 - 24/07/10 09:01 AM

A friend gave me a head's up on a 32 Winchester caliber single shot rifle manufactured by Winchester that is on private sale near Chicago. I haven't seen the rifle yet, but my friend bought another gun from the seller, and he said that it was in nice shape. I am guessing that it would be an 1885 Low Wall style rifle as it is a Winchester. I hope to have a look at it next week after fixing an appointment with the seller. From what I know, this caliber was a 30-30 class round which did not do well, though a number of ammo retailers have ammo available.

Presuming that I am offered a good price, would this be a good rifle to buy? Is there anything that I should look out for?

Thanks for all suggestions / advice in advance, and good hunting!

I think perhaps it is a High Wall - don't know for sure.

In the Winchester you can load it a bit higher than factory - ie: 2,350fps to 2,450fps with 170gr. the factory stuff is 2,220fps or so from a 20" bl. I suspect the Winchester will have a 26" bl. and might give around 2,320fps for the 170gr. PP.

Winchester factory ammo with 170gr. Power Points was very accurate in my 20" Carbine of 1958 - to the tune of 1 1/2" at 100 yards for 5 shot groups. RP factory 170's made 6" patterns.

I loaded up a batch of 170gr. HOrnady FN's for it, however traded off the rifle before testing them in the M94. the fellow who bought it, said they were not quite as accurate as the WW factory, but both he and his son could hold 2" at 100 yards with it. Not bad for factory horrid iron sights on a lever gun.

I think it is a tiny bit better than a .30/30 - and more so with the Single Shot's longer tube. US made factory 8x57 Mauser ammo is not any faster than what that Winchester will put out.

I'd buy it if the price was right. It would have to be quite wrong, as the action is valuable in itself, to a BP ctg. shooter.

If this is a low-wall rifle and the cartridge is said to be a .32 Winchester, it will most likely be a .32 W. C. F. (.32-20).

Other .32 caliber chamberings include the .32 Short, .32 Long, .32 Extra Long, .32 Ideal (.32-25-150), .32-40 and .32 Win. Special.

If factory original, I would expect the to see the .32-40 and .32 Win. Special chamberings only in the high wall configuration.

TKS Bill - I didn't even think about the .32/20 - which would be what a low wall is chambered for, especially designated .32 Winchester.

The .32/20 used to be used for deer, but is a mite light in my opinion. It will drive an 86 to 100gr. bullet to around 1,400fps.

I would say definitely NOT a deer round. I have owned several low-wall's in this caliber and it is a fun gun to shoot. However, the caliber is really underpowered for deer, in my opinion, and is surpassed by at least one other suitable caliber for deer in the low-wall configuaration, the .44-40. Even this one is still marginal. But these rifles are fun to shoot, plink, varmit shooting such as crows, groundhogs, etc..

Just my 2 cents worth.

Use all the general guidelines for old Winchesters. Look for original condition; if possible, get a fax sheet from the museum in Cody.

Gentlemen,

Thank you very much, everyone for your advice. I have talked to the owner of the rifle and shall meet him this weekend. Sorry for mistaking the rifle for what it isn't - you are absolutely right: it is a low wall in 32 Winchester with an octagonal barrel. But again, I haven;t seen the rifle and hope to check it out and buy it if all goes well.

Thank you again and I shall post after talking to the owner this weekend. Good hunting, everyone!
