Stock Finish's, namely Slacum Oil
      #164597 - 20/07/10 10:53 AM

Hello all,

I have a rather nice blank that I will eventually stock a 318 Westley Richards with for myself, and I want to give "Slacum Oil" a try for the finish. I have a couple of English recipes but there are a few ingredients named in them that I’m not sure what they are.

So my questions are thus:

Venice Turpentine, what is it, does it have other names?

Spirits of Wine, what is it, does it have other names?

Spirits of Turpentine, what is it, does it have other names?

Any ideas where I might find these here in Australia?

Many thanks in advance for your time and infomation.

Best

ALEX

I just looked in "Gunstock Finishing and Care" and didn't find reference to any of those materials, at least not in the index..

Hi Alex,

I don't know if you tried Google but this came up with Venice Turpentine.

Cheers,

P.S. How is "Son" going"

Alex, I guess you could use Google to find all the ingredients. Spirits of wines, I see, is grape spirit or any ethanol. There may be cheaper ways to get it but Polish rectified spirit from big licensed grocers would do for that - about $70 for 500ml. Metholated spirits may do as I understand it is no longer metholated for safety reasons (to disuade deros from drinking it, I hear an emetic is added).

Cheers
- Paul

G'Day Fella's,

Alex, sorry I can't help you with the stock finish ingredients but if you need a rifle blank of the correct internal dimensions for the .318, contact (Robert) at Tobler Barrels, at 50-61 North Street, Robertson, NSW. 2577 ( tobler@rdtproducts.com )02 4885 1881.

A good mate of mine restored a rifle a few years back and between them (he and Tobler), they purchased the Barrel Drill, Barrel Reamer, Button and Chamber Reamer to suit the .318 Accelerated Express!

Alex, if you send me an email, I'll forward you some images of this particular rifle and some of it's history.

I got my recipe from a gentleman in England, who obtained it directly from a retired Purdey stocker.Spirits of turpentine is just turpentine,i got mine from a paint store.

Spirits of wine is ethyl alcohol--do not omit this if your recipe includes vinegar!

Venice turpentine --I have used the stuff for horse hooves, and it works but I have been told that the venice turps for artists is better.Artists grade boiled linseed oil is also better, but more costly.

I have never been happy with commercial finishes, but I like slaclum oil.It takes some serious time to get a finish, but you will like the end result.

Alex,
I have seen all of them offered by many luthier supply houses.
