Any Fix for CZ452 Safety?
      #164584 - 20/07/10 04:45 AM

Am I the only one who isn't a fan of the CZ452's "backwards" safety?

A couple of years ago I bought a 452 Scout for one of my sons. I really tried to buy something else, because of the safety operation, but I didn't see anything that was well designed for a good "first rifle" with room to grow (i.e., short LOP, short barrel, single shot adapter but built for magazines, quality construction, etc.). So I ignored the safety.

Now he's regularly shooting several other rifles. Not surprisingly, all of their safeties work on a more typical forward-to-fire basis. The more he shoots, the more concerned I am that he's going to forget which is which.

To be fair: my kids have had gun safety drilled into their skulls from a very young age (ask the 3-year-old what happens when he points a toy gun at somebody). The worst thing that is likely to happen is a missed animal because he pushes the safety forward on his 452, or vice-versa on another rifle. But it still worries me.

It seems like there would be a viable market for a replacement safety unit for all of the 452's out there, but I can't find one. Am I just overlooking them? Do the majority of shooters think this is no big deal?

G'Day Fella's,

TAW1126 I think you might have a viable gripe with the BRNO and CZ rimfire safety but I don't know of any other options?
I personally have a 1951 manufactured BRNO Model 1 and a 2003 manufactured CZ 452-2E (I think that's it's designation?), they both have basically the same (but different) safety and I have just become used to them over the years.
Both of these rifles will consistently put 5 shots into a group that can be covered by an Australian 5 cent coin (1/2") at 50 meters (These are one of the few rifle I can shoot without flinching like a bastard)! So when I have that kind of accuracy, I tend to ignore any other short comings in design!!!

It may be a good idea to get your children to use this rifle, just so they don't get used to one thing? They might be presented with yet another, different safety option one day and not know what to do!
Flexibility, should be every bodies best option!

Hope this is of some assistance.

Not listed at the present, but a number of years ago Brownells listed a reverse safety (off forward, on back) for the little Brno/CZ rifles - don't recall the maker, but a call to the tech dept. may jog someone's memory as to who made/makes them.

That might be the lemonade out of lemons way to look at it. Never considered that before. As far as the rifle itself, I think it's a great gun. Shoots well, and durable enough that I could probably drive fence posts with it. I recently bought myself a new 22 magnum and looked really hard at the CZ, but ended up buying a Ruger 77/22 due to the (wait for it...wait for it...) safety on the CZ.

Bill- thanks for the tip. I'll contact Brownells this morning and see what they can figure out.

TAW1126, for a long time Brno Model 1 & 2 and now CZ 452 rimfire rifles, have been very popular in Australia.
Lucky for us, and not without good reason!
As I said, I have been shooting them and also working on them for a bloody long time and I'm of the belief that they are one of the most robust rimfire rifles ever made.
They are still built like a Centerfire rifle used to be, with no aluminum or plastic component parts!

The only thing that I have ever had to replace, is the ejector which can wear out from LOTS of Use but they are easily replaced and readily available from the Australian importer. Or you can build up the worn ejector with a Tig Welder, file it back to the correct shape and profile and you are back in business.

Aren't the safeties on the top of the bolt now?

I have a 6 month old CZ452 and Yes, the safety is on the bolt, like a mod 70 but in the center of the bolt not on the side.

Cheers,
