.416 Rigby Factory Ammo
      #164280 - 16/07/10 09:52 AM

Well .416 Rigby ammo is thin on the ground here in Australia.

Tamworth Firearms have ordered 10 boxes of Hornady Solids from a Melbourne Distributor so that I can buy two boxes. Great service from the guys down there.

If anyone is after .416 Rigby factory solids, Tamworth Firearms will have them. I'll sight in, practise and reload the emptys with Softs. Happy Days with a Big Bore coming up.

Hi tophet1! They told me they were all sold and are going to email me with reloading component prices. Or maybe it was the softs are all sold and I didn't want solids.

Wouldn't mind a couple of packets of factory to check out. I did previously buy 450-400 Hornady they have had in stock plus cases. Gee it gets expensive quickly! Interesting they also had 450 Nitro last time I was there, late May.

Have fun with it and don't forget the photos

Cheers, Chris

Just a follow up from TF. They cannot get 416 brass, so hopefully I can get some factory rounds and go from there.

tophet1, what dies did you get and from where? I will be interested to read about your loads.

Cheers, Chris

I've never actually bought any factory rounds for either of my big bore rifles. I'm too cheap, and was frightened away by the cost. It has been an excellent experience, learning to handload for these, and is very satisfying. But, you've got to do what you've got to do to get brass, eh. The price of Norma brass has gone up quite a bit since I bought mine (for .416 Rigby). Have fun!

Tamworth Firearms also took the liberty to get a set of Hornady .416 Rigby dies sent up as well. They maybe stuck with a shell holder as I brought one in from Sinclairs with my last order.

It looks like I will be shooting off the solids and reloading with softs. There is a derth of components. I'm not paying Norma prices for domestic use. The Ammo should arrive in two weeks (Boogie).

Don't worry. Load data and chrono'd velocities will be posted in due course. I'm going to build a portable bench I can stand at for bench testing.

I don't know if Weatherby brass is more available in OZ, but back before the .416 was reintroduced, I used to turn the belts off .378 Weatherby cases and resize them to .416 Rigby. They worked fine in my Ruger No. 1 and as recently as two weeks ago worked fine in my CZ 550. I believe the rim size is a little different, so you may have to use a Weatherby size shell holder.

Just back from trying some more loads in the 416Rigby.

AR2213SC (AKA Hodgdon H4831) 106Grains behind a 410 grain Bertram SP 2460fps

AR2213SC 104 Grains behind a 410grain Woodleigh 410 Solid 2480fps

AR2209 (AKA Hodgdon H414/H4350) 98 Grains behind 410 Bertram SP 2450fps

AR2209 90Grains behind 450Grain Woodleigh RNSP 2250fps

The 450 hit 2 inches lower at 50mts all the rest were in the same group.
With the 450 grain pills I am working without reloading data but I can still go higher in velocity going by the case's and extraction but why bother.

All these were out of a 26" barrel on the CZ550. I found my thresh hold for shooting this off the bench 16 rounds. Next time might take a longer break between loads, like 20mins instead of 3.

Cheers
Greg

The distributor's service is good as long as your shop pays its bills, Tophet.

I wanted some ammo for my .450/.400 but the laid back gun dealer gave me the distributor's number and said: 'You ring him.'

I did this but when the stuff was ready, the distributor said I'd have to pick it up from a different shop 'cause the first guy hadn't paid for a previous order.

I don't know who the distributor is but I thought it was bloody good of Tamworth Firearms to get in 10 boxes when I only want 2.

Well picked up two boxes yesterday of Hornady 400 grain DGS factory ammo and out to he range this AM.

The Express sights on the CZ 550 were placing POI 6" off to the left out to 75 yards. The factory front sight in miniscule so I have ordered a white fluro front replacement sight from Brownells which is 6.5mm high. This is the same height as the factory sight. I will adjust the expres sights after it is in place.

I then placed on the Recknagel roll off mounts with custom leupold 1-4x20 scope with #4 reticle.

It took me five rounds to be 2" high at 100 yards. Three rounds into 1.760" wasn't bad I thought for a 4x scope with thick crosshairs. Good enough for me.

Hi John,

I agree, 1 3/4" of Buffalo is quite good enough for me as well.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff
