Verney-Carron Azur or Merkel 140 in nitro cal's?
      #164172 - 15/07/10 06:15 AM

The heading says it all.
Which of them are the best with regard to:

- balance
- durability
- regulation

I'm torn between the two..

Persoanlly I think the VC is a finer featured gun wheres the Merkel is a bit chunkier...

One of the big differences however in my mind is the fact that you can get the VC stock made to fit, at no extra cost.

One thing I don't like is double side by sides with beaver-tail fore-ends as compared to splinter slimmer fore-ends.

I agree about the BT forend. Much prefer a splinter.

I haven't seen nor held a VC, so I'm not really qualified to state an opinion on this question. However, I own a Merkel in .500NE and find it to be a good, serviceable, accurate, and fun rifle. While it's no London best, I find it reasonably attractive as a field grade rifle. It's a great beater rifle.

Can someone post photos of the VC Azur so I can have some idea of what it looks like?

Thanks Matt. From the photos and the website referral I'll say I like the looks and the price of the Merkel much better.

I also like the fact that Merkel has been making double rifles for over 110 years.

Another $0.02 worth! (notwithstanding the nice comment from Jeff above).

There are 2 big differences between the Merkel and the V-C gun. The V-C has a much stronger lock up and is a custom made to order gun. Merkels are all made to the same specifications, all of the custom shop V-C are made to order. The customer can spec the weight, features, barrel length, shape of action, shape of the forearm wood, etc. Here are some pics of a gun I recently delivered.

Link removed. Photos displayed below.

This is not to say the Merkel is a bad gun, not at all. But it is also not in the same class as the V-C. The Merkel is a very good quality production grade gun and the V-C is a bespoke custom gun. I currently have 4 used Merkels that have been taken in trade towards a V-C gun.
V-C also has roots in the gun trade going back to 1650, kinda makes Merkel look like the new kid on the block.
Yes, I will be at the Vintigers, as well as, Dallas, Houston, and SCI. The V-C guns dominated the top places in the Vintigers stopping rifle shoot the last few years. Josh Weiner has a gun in 450-400 that he has run 4,000 rounds through in the last 2 years. He bought a 500 last year and just placed a order for a 450 NE last month. He will be there again this year.
Please stop by and say hello, will be happy to show you the V-C gun in person.

Thanks for the input, a Merkel .470 is now for sale

A very handsome DR, and the actions can be made more "english" for those who wants that.

My Merkel has a straight stock, which is good for balance, but it is a little bit low for me. Have thought of getting the sights filed down a fair bit, but that makes the barrels and top of receiver to block out a lot of the view.

The Merkel is a good basic rifle. However, having owned both, IMO it can't begin to compare to the Verney-Carron.

The gun posted above looks very familiar.

The trend today, with modern double rifles, is that the beavertail forend, or a somewhat scaled down version of it is dominant. They do require more effort and energy to make, than a splinter. I too like splinter forends, but have come to also like the modern beavertail just as well (they have grown on me, through years of using them, along with using splinter on many of my doubles). I certainly would never reject a specific double, just because it had a beavertail forend, if everything else about it was right or satisfying.
