9.3x62 and 9.3x74R

How do these two cartridges compare regarding performance on game? And how do these compare with .375 H&H Flanged?

In factory loadings, both 9,3's are ballistic twins, though the 9,3x62 can be handloaded hotter. The .375 flanged is the British counterpart of the German 9,3x74R.

Both are great cartridges! Both are a little less in the paper numbers than the old 375 rimmed, but I don't think most animals notice

Also if you are looking for an affordable double the 9.3x74r is just easier and cheaper to come by than a 375 rimmed.

I do not think so! The 9,3x62 is even in fabricloads a bit hotter than the 9,3x74R! If you want to compare the 375H&H with a 9,3mm take Brennekes 9,3x64! And here the Brenneke is the better choice. But you should be sure of yor ammunition delivery service Not in europe, but in africa or america...

You are right about the cartridge power comparison but the .375 Flanged (rimmed) is usually loaded lighter than the .375 H&H Magnum. Maybe a hundred or two hundred feet per second less. Not much difference though.

Ballistically speaking, I also don't think so...!

However, one has to see the historical development behind those cartidges: both the germans with the 9,3x74R and the 9,3x62 as the english with the .375 rimmed and flanged versions wanted to have similar rounds for bolt actions and double rifles. (Also, I must admit that the germans made a better job back then of keeping the ballistic performance of the two rounds similar. (and yes, obvioulsy with todays modern powders and strong actions the unflanged version can be loaded hotter)).

One works of caution however:
in most african countries there is still a legal mimimum caliber of .375 (i.e. 9,5mm) for hunting the big five in place!
With that in mind, the 9,3 might not be legal for hunting buffalo and such, whereas the various .375's are.
Also heard that most PH's will tolerate 9,3x64 (not x62) from their (mostly european) clients since it has a very similar performance to the .375 H&H.

So, from the stricly legal point of view, there might actually be a "need" for a flanged .375!

In a modern rifle with a long barrel of 26"s and a warm but safe handload the 9.3x62 will equal the 375 H&H and the 9.3x62 for all practical purposes...My 9.3x62 Buff load is a 320 gr. woodleigh soft or solid at 2400 FPS plus just a tad or the 300 gr. Swift at 2450...My 375 H&H pet load is a 350 gr. Woodleigh at 2350 FPS or a 300 gr. Northfork at 2500 FPS...

Your question referred to the difference in game killing...I have never seen any difference in the three of them and I have shot DG with all three. I quit using the 9.3x64 because my 9.3x62 was lighter and killed as well..But be sure the 9.3x64 is one heck of a great caliber.
