HIH Prince Abdorrezza
      #16309 - 29/06/04 04:00 AM

About a week ago, I received the current SCI newsletter and heard of the passing of the HIH, probably one of the most dedicated hunters of our time. I don't recall ever seeing anything about him, his adventures, or his death on any of these forums. I admit that I don't know much about the man, but was curious why his (hunting) exploits aren't more widely discussed?

Surely this man's experience and adventures are greater than many referenced hunters we seem to discuss more frequently.

Just curious, I admit to being ignorant about this man.

Wow, that is news to me. The prince is supposed to have been one hell of an accomplished hunter. I believe he has written a book on his exploits...here is an example of his prowess http://www.safaripress.com/page28.html

Yeah, I have the book on order. I don't think it written by the Prince, but taken from his notes and compiled by someone else. Though, unless they changed it a lot, he should have credit.

Here's the obituary from SCI

June 4, 2004 - Obituary - H.I.H. PRINCE ABDORREZA PAHLAVI
by Warren Parker
H.I.H. Prince Abdorreza Pahlavi Of Iran (center) is shown with one of his many trophy animals.

On May 11, 2004, Safari Club International and the hunting world lost one of our great friends and supporters to cancer. Prince Abdorreza died in Florida.

His Highness was instrumental in supporting one of the world’s greatest conservation organizations in Europe – the C.I.C. He also was founder and benefactor of the International Foundation for the Conservation of Wildlife. Through his foundation, funding was provided for research, advising governments, training students, reintroducing wildlife, combating poaching, and protecting wildlife around the world. The Prince and his foundation believed in sustainable use of wildlife – conservation that includes hunting.

The Prince was the recipient of Safari Club International’s Hunting Hall of Fame in 1984, International Hunting award in 1988, and was the 7th winner of the Weatherby Big Game Award in 1962. He had taken over 260 varieties of big-game animals and more than 400 record-class trophies. His contemporaries were men like Jack O’Connor, Elgin Gates, Herb Klein, and C. J. McElroy.

He was instrumental in setting up game reserves and implementing game laws in his native Iran. His policies brought the wildlife of his country from its nadir in post WWII to unprecedented levels in the late 1970s. Many species benefited from these policies including the cheetah and the Persian fallow deer, not to mention the many different varieties of Iranian sheep.

Safari Club International will truly miss this great and kind man. We wish his wife of 50 plus years, Princess Pari Sima and his two children our best during this sad time.

I feel that I am lucky to have called Prince Abdorreza my friend and I will miss his smiling face.

The world was lucky that before he died he was able to see in print his only book Royal Quest.

I'm guessing this prince is an Iranian exile (?). (oops yes I see it is in your post)

If so I have seen photographs of his trophies and advertisements for his book. But only once I believe read a discussion on one of his hunts.

When the book arrives it would be nice to read some extracts or comments on his life and hunting.

Sure Nitro!

There are a few stories of some of his African hunts in Mellon's African Hunter. I'll have to dig through the storage boxes to find that one, though.

He seemed to be such an accomplished hunter, yet I don't think I've ever seen a tale of his hunts in any magazine or other publication, besides a few books. Such a hunter as he was, would seem more appropriate to see as much about him as Elgin Gates (which is dang sparse enough) or C.J. McElroy.

For those that are interested, I received "Royal Quest" yesterday. While I haven't had the chance to read the entire book, I have had the chance to browse the photos and read a few chapters.

My first impressions are that this is more of a picture book than hunting book. The Prince was in the U.S. when the Ayatollah Kohmeni overthrew the sitting government (Prince Abdorrezza's brother, the Shah). All of Abdorrezza's photos, notes, and trophies were in Tehran at his home and in the Tehran museum when the coup occurred, so the Prince lost those.

The book was written by Bill Quimby, aided by the Prince's recollections and reconstructed hand written notes, in 2002. Photos were donated by other publishers and the Prince's friends, including Mellon, O'Connor's estate, CJ McElroy, and others.

The book doesn't go into great detail about any of the hunts. I suppose, at least in some instances, nearly half a century between the hunt and the idea for the book had dulled the Prince's recollection. The chapter about hunting Kenya in 1964 is a mere 4 pages long, much of that space is taken up by large photographs. The text could probably be condensed to 1 or 2 pages. This is pretty typical throughout the book, though chapters about hunting Iran and the Prince's conservation achievements garner more print.

The photos are incredible, and the book is dominated by photos.

Quotes by the Prince included in the text are more about his overall recollection of the safari as a whole, other than any particular hunt. He does relate scolding a few PH's that he felt were too trigger happy. He does relate the close relationship between himself and James (Jay) Mellon. Mellon had preceded the Prince in many of the more rare hunts in Africa, though he was several years the Prince's junior. Mellon accompanied the Prince during the hunts for Walia Ibex and others, making trophy recommendations and area recommendations.

I'll write more as I finish reading the book, when time allows.

This book is a limited edition, though I did not spring for the premium edition that carried the $1,250 USD price tag. It still carries a hefty price, that I'm sure as a collectable would recover it's cost in the years to come, but not sure as world hunting read it carries that much value. But then again, I'm only about 10 chapters into it.

Reading through the Prince's achievements in the game fields around the world, his hunting ethic, his determination, and his marksmanship, I do believe he belongs in a class of hunter with few contemporaries. Maybe James Mellon, Herb Klein, Elgin Gates, and CJ McElroy could be considered his peers. I don't suspect any hunter beginning a world quest today would ever be able to accomplish the feats of these gentlemen, not with the political strife and conservation efforts that abound.

The Prince does relate that his safari in Chad may have been the greatest of all his adventures. He took Addax, Scimitar Horned Oryx, Barbary Sheep (goat), and Red sea Ibex, none of which can be hunted in their native ranges today.

Gentlemen

The price was a very dedicated hunter and a big fan of the 7X57.

I think some of his record trophy's are displayed in a wildlife museum in Teheran? I hope there will be more books written about the price

Cheers

I think all of the Prince's trophies that were taken before 1980 were left in Iran. Typically, he tried to collect two nice trophies of each animal on his hunts. One would be for his private collection and the other for the Tehran museum.

I'm not sure where his world record Pasang is now, but figure it is in Iran, as the Prince took it in 1978, I believe.

I remember seeing photographs of the man with a tiger which he had hunted.

A lucky hunter indeed.

On his first trip to India, he complained that he didn't get to spend enough time hunting animals other than Tigers. Can't remember his exact # of tiger kills but was 5 or 6 during his short visit. The Indian government thought the other game (except for elephant) was below being hunted by royalty so they felt it was an emabarrasment if the Prince hunted those. He did take Water Buffalo and an enormous Gaur while there, among others, but they keep pressuring him to shoot more tigers. I believe he made 4 or 5 hunting trips to India.

There are several mentions and photographs of the Prince in Elgin Gates' book "Trophy Hunter in Asia" as there are a number of stories of Gates' hunting in Iran, on a number of hunts as a guest of the Prince.
