Is This A Type G? PART TWO
      #162969 - 29/06/10 05:59 AM

The Mauser I started asking questions about last week arrived today. Which is prompting some additional questions.

First, I can confirm that all the numbers match, including the stock and the smooth steel buttplate. No visible caliber is marked, but under the barrel I found "7,85 8,2 240" which I interpret to be a bore & groove diameter of 0.309" & 0.323". Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that indicates 8x57 JS. What does the "158,14" mean, if anything?

Also, next to the serial number marking in the barrel channel was what appears to be a transverse "H". Is that the model designation? If anything I was expecting to see an "L", or nothing at all.

"240" is for the rifling twist, one turn in 240mm, about 9.5". 7.85mm bore, 8.2mm groove, 240mm twist are intenal factory designations, denoting the barrel was indeed set up for the post-1904 "military" spitzer-bullet 8x57IS cartidge, so feeding it with modern ammo should be no problem at all. 156.14 was part of the official proof marks, it is a gauge number like 12, 16, 20 used for shotguns. According to the 1891 proof tables, it stands for a bore diameter at time of proof between 7.87mm = 156.14 and the next number 141.95 = 8.13 mm. These old-fashioned gauge numers were in use up to 1910 - 11, depending on proofhouse. Then the Proofhouses changed over to mm designations for the bore diameter.

The letter following the serial # is the inspectors mark.

Thanks again. So the assumption would be that this is an Africa Model, apparently with a special-order peep sight?

There's no doubt that the front sight has been re-mounted in the operation to shorten the barrel to ~22-inches, and I assume the forward-mounted sling ring was installed at that time.

I would add its not assumption but certainty. A rare configuration. The peep sight is imho an Oberndorf special order addition.
A few months ago I held in my hands a single square bridge Kurz Mauser (unfortunately action only) where one could see the remainders of that same peep sight / typical cut out in the square bridge.

Action number was in the 20xxx range.

Sad to see that your rifle was butchered by shortening the original barrel. Easily to be seen , because the front sight ramp is resoldered on the wrong position ( Iīve always seen the front sight ramp flush with the muzzle on original Oberndorf rifles) and naturally the superfluous barrel band sling eye.

Anyway- in spite of the alterations- a highly desirable and very interesting item.

Congratīs

Yes, the tangent sight is windage adjustable.
