To file or not to file.

My .577 BPE is shooting a nice composite group, but 10" high.

It needs the rear (original) sight filled down.

Woud you do it?

I would use a different front site as opposed to filing the rear site. JJ could do it easily.

I thought of that also. Thanks.

Have you given up hope in finding a load combination that shoots to the sites?

I have one more load to try. Montana Swaging makes a 500 grain paper patch i'd like to try. The rifle is off being repaired right now.

Replacing the front sight with a higher one will solve the problem. Or one may remove both front and rear sight carefully, store them away for collector's purposes and fit new sights into the existing cuts for shooter's use. Then the rifle may be restored anytime to original condition. BTW you quite often come across well used double rifles on which the sights were replaced sometime to suit the eyes of a former user.

bonanza- 10" at what range? 50yards? That's a lot and will take considerable sight alteration.
I would change both sights as recommented, thus halfing the difference on each sight. This will maintain fit of the gun better than making a big change to one sight.

I like Kuduae's recommendation.

Gatsby - would heavier load, ie: higher velocity bring the zero down, or raise it? Can the way the rifle is held, perhaps too lightly, account for the higher impact? In my .58 RB double, I noticed better regulation and elevation between the barrels stopped, when holding the gun quite tightly. Probably not at all the same with a ctg. gun of some value (compared to the poorly made Eyetie muzzleloader).
