bakerb,

a double rifle will tolerate only one load. That means one bullet weight at one specific velocity using one specific powder. That's my experience. Others on these forums report brighter horizons. They evidently have magic fingers and pray to the correct god. I don't.

CaptCurl is one of the several very knowledgeable people on this website where double rifles are concerned, and the whole post that surrounds the quote above is spot on.

The part of the quote above that is printed in bold is absolutely true in regard to a "PERFECT" regulating load. However that load is almost impossible to find precisely as well! That being said the best we can hope to come by is a load that is very close and settle. With this in mind, for another load that uses a lighter, or heavier bullet other than the sweet spot load, there is no reason it is not possible, with a very careful search, to find a workable load other than the sweet spot load. IMO, the reason people report brighter horizons in regard to these loads is because they have found them over time, sometimes because of the lack of certain powders, or bullets. Necessity is the mother of invention!

You should expect your double rifle to tolerate only one load. It is often said you can use different weight bullets in your double. That's a substantial part of the logic behind recommending a .450 NE ("there are sooo many sizes and shapes of .458 bullets"). Let me tell you it's false. I have shot and I have owned a hell of a bunch of double rifles. Invariably my experience has been that a double rifle will tolerate only one load. That means one bullet weight at one specific velocity using one specific powder. That's my experience. Others on these forums report brighter horizons. They evidently have magic fingers and pray to the correct god. I don't.

Some guys claim there is a 75% rule.

ie if the rifle is regulated for a 480 gr bullet, use the same powder charge (obviously using a 'filler' if needed) behind a bullet 75% of the weight.

eg
in a .450 - 480 or 500 grs use a 350 gr bullet.
in a .400 - 400 gr, use a 300 gr bullet.
in a .375 - 300 gr use a 235 gr bullet.

The 75% rule proponents claim a good number of doubles will regulate reasonably well if this is done.

Certainly the old bullet makers seemed to also load ammo in those ratios as well.

Don't know, never tried it. I just use the standard load on everything so far. Will try it out one day however.

the .450 is attractive to me for different reasons than reloading and different bullets.

It's just a little different than having the (seemingly) very popular .470. Probably less recoil than a .500 and built on a slimmer action. And I'm sure it's all I would ever need.

Yet, in my uneducated and ignorant mind, it's still a "big" bore.

The slimmer action, differentness, (possibly) less recoil, and nostalgia of the round that began the NE craze (if my reading is correct) are really why I like the cartridge.

These posts have been very educational and I really really appreciate it.

For all the reasons just stated I truly love the .450NE. It is a wonderful round, and I equally love its father, the .450BPE.

With one of the former and two of the latter I have voted with my pocketbook.

But I must admit a true love for the .500NE and its father, the .500BPE. I have one of each!

Enjoy.

The pre-war british doublerifles will always hold their value because they have all the important factors such as a name, quality ,history + caliber in one package. A new Heym, american "rigby" will only have value as a users workingtool...but good tools indeed. I am sure if the London Rigby, duplicate pre-historic doublerifles in a modern package with the high quality one do expect with the "Rigbyname" on it, and with the right architechture(looks), they could end up with being a good investment + being a good gun too.
