Fair chaise reds in NZ?
      #1620 - 12/02/03 11:26 PM

After looking at the Dialastag thread I am wondering how one would go about organizing a "hunt" over there?

I would like to go maybe this year, maybe next but certainly not on a farm with doped animals.

I remember 4 or 5 years ago there were outfitters who would just take you out, look for deer, and charge a (very reasonable)set fee rather than charge you for every point on the head.

Can you still find hunts like that?

Express

I hunted with an outfitter whom I would say is the best outfitter from anywhere whom I have met. And several other clients have said the same thing to me as well without any prompting by me.

I lost his contact details and have tried to find them on the net, white pages, yellow pages etc but to no avail. I know he said he had enough repeat business to not need to advertise again.

When i hunted with him he only hunted fair chase - nothing behind wire. As to value, I am not sure what his prices are like now, as I hunted in 1993 and took a nice 12 point red. Very even. Value is a personal judgement as well, but I know his prices back then were good and if who say you are an Aussie you may get a good deal as he put a number of hunts aside for Aussies.

I will try to find some pics and post them.

His name is Brian Harre and I think he traded under Bushland Safaris and was based in Auckland.

If he is still in the business I can recommend him 100%.

(PS He specialised in Kiwi Sambar and that is what a lot of local hunters went over there for. Personally I love reds and wanted a red first. A couple of hunters also went over for Sika as well. Why haven't I gone back myself? Now that I think of it, no answer I should have.)

Express the Australian Deer Association (A.D.A.) has over the years carried an ad or two for free range hunts that would suit you in their magazine.Other than that mate hit the net.

Hunting reds on public land in NZ not a problem. Not a great chance of getting a huge trophy. I am off to NZ next year for six weeks to hunt Sika, Red, Whitetail, Chamois and Thar, with Trout, Blue cod fishing, crays etc also...
