My mate has several boxes of WAA12 H wads.(green)

I believe they are for 1 ounce loads in 12 gauge Winchester AA cases.

I'd tape one together (the petals) to a .730" outside diameter & fill it with shot, then weigh the shot it holds to just barely overflowing.

Daryl, it took 1 1/4 oz to fill it.
What type and size hull would they be safe in?

They would ber deigned with the inside tapered plastic walls - WW hulls, I would think.

I'd resort to normal loading practises by that, I mean if one accesses a loading manual and begins loading with reduced loads and works towards velocity and patterning results, about any hull should be useable. Note, that the wads designed for tapered wall hulls might allow powder to move forward in non-tapered hulls. A simple thin overshot wad will not take up much space, will allow the plastic cupped base of the wad to do it's job in sealing powder gasses behind the wad and will hold the powder under the wad, which is the main use.

Always start at the bottom again, when changing any component, from the primer up to the type or style of crimp. The slower burning powders give much more leeway (safety) in shotshell loading, as long as there is room for them. Very ligth loads with slow powders can result in bloopers, but these are not dangerous as they are in rifles as detonation doesn't seem to happen in shotshells - perhaps due to the relative ease of moving shot loads through a smooth bore. ALWAYS take a cleaning rod with you to the range when testing shotloads - handy for clearing wads that stick in the bore form bloopers. Slow powders sometimes have a narrow window where they work properly. If you can get 7625 or 4756, that's where I'd start as most 1 1/4oz 1,300fps loads with them produce only 8,000 to 8,500CUP IIRC.

Spot on Daryl.
They are designed to use in compression formed hulls
Tapered inside walls, not straight walls .
Confirmed by Winchester.

Hi Alan.

I have loaded with WAA12H wads for many years now & they are most definitely 1 1/4 oz wads.
I'd suggest getting hold of a copy of Winchester's reloading manual which lists several good loads.
Dont try to load too high in regard to muzzle velocity. Anywhere from 1220 to 1300 FPS is plenty for a heavy 1 1/4oz load, although lead shot is no longer acceptable for duck hunting in Victoria. My own loads are only 1230fps & will kill reliably to 50 yards with ease. I only use these for foxes these days having switched to Bismuth for ducks.

As an aside, I also load home made Bismuth shot for ducks, using the WAA12H wads.
Bismuth is readilly available in ingot form, albeit costly (last batch I bought was $35/kg with min of 5kg ingot = $175 for 5kg)
I have a shot maker & make my own shot by mixing it 4% with tin.
I then use the WAA12H wad to load 1 1/8oz of bismuth shot.
As the Bismuth is marginally lighter than lead, 1 1/8oz will load by volume into the same space as 1 1/4oz lead. I use a standard 'stiff 1 1/8oz load (I use Vectan D20 powder over Win 209 primer).
This gives me a MV of approx 1280fps at a modest low to mid 9000+psi pressure & it kills brilliantly.
Anyone that can tell the difference between these loads & a good lead load is a better man than I.
Easy to load, good on barrels (no need to open chokes out, etc with Bismuth), good on the shoulder, & just work damned well.
