As you all know My Father,Sister and myself hunted Cape Buffalo in Zimbabwe in April.
Thanks to some great work by Geoff of Woodleigh bullets he got some 400 grain Hydro 404 Jeffery projectiles made for me and they arrived the week before I left. These projectiles only down side to my knowledge is that they can be hard to get to feed but the planets lined up and they fed just find.As yet I can't get them to feed in my 9.3x62 but a mate just bought a CZ 550 in 9.3x62 and they feed well off the shelf.
Dad shot his Cape Buffalo @ 110 yards front on putting the bullet straight through the heart and we found the bullet 6" inside his ham.It almost exited which is pretty good straight line performence to say the least !!.

I shot my Dugga boy @ about 25 yards. He was starting to walk towards me to see what I was. When I fired he was looking at 5 o'çlock. He turned and bolted away towards 1 o'clock and I fired again. I said to Craig I thought I put in two good shots so we followed. We found him dead 110 yards away.
The first shot cut off a sapling, hit the Buff in the shoulder and exited out his ham.

The second shot cut off two little branches about 5 yards apart then hit the Buff behind the last rib exiting out the near side shoulder.

Here are the only two 400 grain Hydro's we got back.

I reckon they're the fugliest bullet I've ever seen...... BUT, I knew that as they're from Woodleigh, they'd turn out to be helluva good bullets...
The .404 is a great calibre and I have one made by Sabi Rifles in Nelspruit as my back up/loaner rifle and it sounds like the combination of calibre and bullet works a treat!

Hi Neale,
Well done, it seems that the name "Woodleigh" has become one of the worlds leading projectiles and from your report again proves why. Kynoch is loading most of the "Old Time" cartridges thanks to Geoff's foresight in making his projectiles based on the "Old" Kynoch design.
Glad to see that the sowing has finished and now hopefully we can get some more stories from you.
Cheers Mate,
Jeff

I also shot my Hyena with the 404. We were waiting for daylight so we could see the big bugger and when he came into view he was only 50 yards away. He turned away from me and towards the bait at a trot. I hit him where the sun doesn't shine and it exited his neck.I was lucky not to smash his jaw up which in the heat of the moment I didn't think of.
When we were taking photo's one of the boy's spotted were the bullet struck the ground after passing through the Hyena.I dug dowm and found the Hydro 3' into the mound of dirt.

After using the Hydro's I would recommend them to anyone hunting bigger animals or in thick brush.
I am sure that they kill better than a traditional solid and they travel like a lazer with no deviation at all.Craig my PH said he believed they would be a great bullet for Elephant. In fact he wants me to try to get him some 400 grain Hydro's for his 416 Rem mag.
Next time I go to Africa it will be "That ugly bullet for me".

Gryphon. As you know these things change every week. There are late season deals if you can be flexible. Look at Lions in the wild,$30000 to $85000.What the dfference is I dont know. Like all these things it is good to go with someone who has been personally recomended to you as opposed to reading there own add.

South Africa big game is always very expensive. For us Australians a budget non trophy Ele are an obvious consideration.

Yep expect to pay big bucks for elephant and buffalo, especially if actually "wild" in South Africa.
South Africa is a good location for plains game.
JMO.
Cow elephant in Zim are cheaper than cape buffalo, at least the last time I priced them. And I know of a 90+ pounder ele bull that was once shot by a client for "free" - well it is a long story ...
For Aussies not able to bring home ivory, a suitable PAC hunt would be a good option too.
