Big Head's Tragic Death - From "Buffaloes" by Carl Warburton
      #161286 - 01/06/10 08:43 PM

Here is a quote from a good old book I just had the privilege of reading, and it gives an insight into our buffalo and the history of the Northern Territory:

"So we carried on each day, averaging about ten beasts without the slightest mishap. Then came a day when the buffaloes disappeared, and it turned out to be one of tragic memory. Leaving Whittaker at camp and taking Big Head, I set out to try and locate them. Big Head was an experienced buffalo-shot, and I had given him Dinah and a gun. If we came across the herd, it was my intention to get as many as possible there and then.

Some twelve miles away in the direction of Munganilida, we found them. We advanced at the gallop, and the buffaloes took to their heels. I had taken one flank and Big Head the other, and we soon overtook the herd. I brought down six bulls in quick succession, and by the shots on my left I guessed that Big Head was meeting with equal success. My wing then swung into the trees, and as it was hopeless to attempt to follow them, I turned, to gallop back to the other wing.

Then in a flash tragedy descended. Big Head was alongside a huge buffalo; as he fired, Dinah side-stepped suddenly to avoid an ant-hill, but crashed into it, throwing Big Head heavily, and coming down herself. The shot had not been fatal; it felled the buffalo, but he was soon on his feet again, snorting with rage. The great beast pawed the ground for a moment, then charged the fallen black.

He got his horns underneath Big Head and tossed him high in the air, and the boy's scream of agony and terror was terrible. Big Head fell to the ground, the blood spurting from him. The buffalo charged again, and with knees and horns, crushed and gored the life out of him.

For the moment I seemed rooted to the ground. But it all happened in a flash, and when I galloped up Big Head was dead. I pulled the heavy .45 revolver from the holster and poured shot after shot into the buffalo until he rolled over lifeless.

A few yards away beautiful Dinah stood with her near foreleg hanging and broken. I shot her, with tears in my eyes.

I rode back and told Whittaker and Koperaki what had occured, and we got a party and set out to gather the remains of the unfortunate Big Head.

At the scene of the slaughter, I wondered grimly if I would be held responsible for the death of Big Head. Koperaki, however, seemed to size up the situation. WIth a tomahawk he hacked away at the buffalo until blood lapped our feet. "Debil-debil belonga buffalo killem dead Big Head," he said. And I knew he did not blame me. He tenderly collected the torn and broken body of his comrade and wrapped it in paper-bark.

That night a burial ceremony was held, and the wailings and lamentations were louder and more full of grief than I had ever heard.

I thought how fortunate Whittaker was when the buffalo gored his horse instead of him. And I realised that either of us might any day come to the same end as poor Big Head."

In stark contrast to the poseurs and that of "Duggaboy's" turista dialogue.

Kamilaroi, you seem to play "bad man down" at every chance. I just happen to be one of those poseurs who uses "Duggaboy" and hunts and write about Cape Buffalo. Have you ever shot one? Ever been charged? I put the fourth .416 into my Dugga Boy at 6 yards. He was coming, but not too fast. He certainly wanted a big piece of me, though.

I've been dangerous game hunting for 15 years and writing about it for the same time.

Am I what you meant by "poseurs"?

If so, come away from the keyboard and hunt with me next year. It's handgun and leopard time. I'll provide the S&W 500.

Or, is the beer just the right temp and the shrimp are done, and, oh, that chair looks sooooo comfortable?

G'day Tom,

Is there a website for the magazine in your signature line? Can you please tell me a little more about the magazine? It sounds like something I'd be interested in.

Well-done on stopping that bull, too. Was it a .416 Rigby, or something else?

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I feel that you were reading a piece of Australian history and I would love to do the same. I will endeavour to find it locally. I also hope that Tom provides the details as it sounds like a great magazine.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Thanks, Jeff. I'd be keen to subscribe to that one.

Yep, it sure was a beaut bit of history (that book). There are paperback copies I saw on Biblioz for around the $100 mark. The copy I read is a 1926 hardcover first print that a colleague lent me.

Sigh.

In short, some years back a poster maybe Duggaboy(?) responded that African buff were the duck's guts in aggro and insisted that waterbuff, banteng and wild cattle were mere wimps. Sort of a "my dicks bigger" exercise.

Since then I've been waiting for a similar proponent.

My experience here in OZ is just that (and extensive) but for some blowins to Afika do the "I've got a big ego and chequebook to match" gig bores me to metaphorical tears. Should you want to then write away to your target audience. To set yourself up with a 50S&W is as I understand it using a hot loaded 45/70 and I would imagine you used a "back-up" PH.

In short I identify with the hunters ethos and value the experience rather than what "situations" others by disregard or stupidity might might put themselves and their PH in.

FWIW I have access to game across both the Americas, arctic and northern Europe and bits of Afrik at minimal expense but home is where the heart is.

For sheer rat cunning give me sambhur any day. EOS

1. "I've got a big ego and checkbook to match."
I'm a retired plumber...
2. My back-up PH uses a Cannon (digital)
3. Them that can, do. Them that can't, talk.
4. African old male Cape Buffalo are the nastiest bovines I've ever met. All that talk ain't BS.
It's hard for you, who have never been there to have an opinion about what you know absolute zero personally. I admit I've only hunted three of them, however, I do have a pretty good opinion of just how bad tempered they are.
5. "disregard or stupidity". Nice comment about hunters you've never seen, or situations you've never been in.

Now, here's the nasty part ...

Before you pass what is obviously limited judgement, why don't you get off your ass and go see. All the world's experiences aren't on TV.

Ps. For sambar I wouldn't waste a .458 Lott round. I have no experience, haven't been there, don't know what they act like - in general, I'm just like you ... But I think my .257 Weatherby would damn near be overkill. (Look it up before you type.)

A 257 Roy is "under-calibre" for use on sambhur as the regs stipulate 7mm and up. BTW I use a 257 Ackley Bob for medium sized animals, close by to Roy performance. I use both a 375MS and Alex Henry 450 BP on sambhur with a 404 Jeff on the way. Gryphon and others can fill you in on what is needed to stop them.

As to some "hunter behaviour" my comments are based on some "in confidence" stories and I'mm sure you have heard some doozies too.

Others around here can appraise you of banteng and feral cattle (20 generations free) but my African sources confirm that their buff are unpredictable but this is not aways the case.

BTW once a banteng is stung by an undergunned hunter then it's not nice to be around. One was stung by an idiot and took 18 30cal pills all up, charging the backup truck in the process.

BTW I'll be in Eritrea's altaplana next year (landmines willing) then an Artic Europe freebie (mixing business and pleasure).

BTW I don't watch hunting videos.
