If someone has some problem hogs on their land, I've got a 500 Jeffery I'd love to take hog hunting!

If you've ever seen the damage they do, you'll understand why farmers are charging to allow hunters to take them. They destroy crops, and it appears that they can't be erradicated. The poor farmer has no choice but to go into the hog hunting business.

seems to me that if they're that much of a problem the farmers might be more reasonable in the fees they charge the hunters

That's one way to look at it. Another is that they need the fees to off-set their year-round efforts at hog "control" (not to metion the liability issues that have unfortunately become the norm these days). Several of the big ranches in TX use helicopters to chase down and shoot as many pigs as they can find...an expensive effort, and still unlikely to make much of a dent.

Here's a hog control option I think most of us can appreciate:

October won't be the best month to be a feral hog in the state of Texas. The state's Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples has declared October "Hog Out Month - Get the Hog Outta Texas!" as part of a campaign to eradicate the pests. The campaign aims to get Texans to lock and load and hunt down the animals, which cause widespread damage to farmers and other landowners.

A friend sent me some cellphone pics of a huge hog that he took while driving home on some interstate near Dallas - the animal didn't even care that my friend parked his car and came out to take pics. Texas does seem to have excellent pig hunting!
