I've been advised over on castbullet.org, that zinc wheel weights have a "Z" on them. Too, they will be a lot lighter for their size. The stick-on wheel weights for mag wheels that have a doublesided tape, are usually pretty much pure lead - very soft. I've not seen any zinc stick-on weights- but don't take that as gospel that they don't exist.

Daryl,

Those "stick-on" weights really smoke and stink when melted!

You also get a lot of smoke and stink when you accidently leave a valve stem in the mix.

Oh the joys of bullet casting. . .

Bob,
Some small commercial printers may have Linotype metal they don't want. They used it longer than we did in newspapers as they dusted the wet ink with 'gold' flecks for wedding invitations, in a way that doesn't work with offset printing or photocopies. It's got both tin and antimony and a certain hardness IIRC, but maybe not enough if you mix it with soft lead.

Cheers
- Paul

Thanks Paul, I'll check into that. We have one local printer in town that just might have some. Years ago our whole local newspaper was printed using linotype. As a boy I used to watch him set print and it was always amazing to me how he could do it backwards with all the letters backwards. Bob H.

Yes, Bob the printers used to set the type upside down because at least then they could read it left to right.

Valve stems? I hope you cast outdoors? Or are the divorce papers ready to sign?

Daryl,

Always outdoors.

Have you never accidently had a valve stem get into the mix? If not, you have a charmed life. The way I get my wheel weights is in a 5 gallon bucket from the tire store. It isn't entirely unusual to find a stray valve stem or two in with the weights.

If you are casting indoors I hope you use good ventilation. Lead fumes are said to be dangerous.
