I would really like to order/buy a take down rifle. I intended to order one from Empire Rifles but it seems that may not pan out.
I have seen the take down M03s and wondered has anybody else had any experience with these ? It is a different concept and not a 98 action but it may be an option.
Perhaps some members can send me in other directions for a new take down bolt action ......

I have an M03 with a few barrels; 243win, 300wm and 7x64. For my use, I decided to go for their synthetic "Extreme" model, and so far I couldn't be happier. All of the barrels are very accurate, and don't need to be resighted when taken off and put back on. The decocker/"safety" takes a little getting used to, but I have come to the conclusion that I like it a lot better than the Blaser decocker/"safety" (I used to own a R93).
Feeding has been very reliable with all the calibers I have, and it will feed with no problems no matter how I hold the gun. Even upside down.
NitroX/John used it to shoot a moose when visiting Norway last fall, so maybe he can give you his impressions as well.
The only thing I might have done differently if getting a new one is get the light model, which saves a bit of weight.

Hello Empire,
I do not own a Mauser 03 rifle, but I had the opportunity to testfire one with a wooden stock and a semi-weight barrel in caliber 8,5x63 Reb (approximately a 338/06).
It was a very good and precise rifle for 100m, 200m and 300m target distance.
(I consider 5 shots in a 6" circle at 300 meters very good, I´m convinced that the rifle could have done better).
Trigger was very good, a crisp, clean break-off.
I dislike the cocking-mechanism, so a Mauser03 is not for me, but barrel precision and handling is good, material is all steel, no "plastic"-feeling.

FWIW, my 300win barrel has no problem shooting 3 inches at 300 meters, and that was shooting in field conditions with a Harris bi-pod. I'm sure if I'd fiddled more around with the load, and shot from a stable bench, it could have done better. With the 243win barrel, and the right ammo, I've gotten groups where all 5 shots are touching at 100 meters.

I will have another look at one. Our local supplier in Melbourne is not much chop but I will persist.
My new Barrett turned up today so as soon as I get over the shock of that I will most likely get one in .308 (already have all the dies etc etc).

I have a M03 in .300WM as well (the fluted match barrel). With handloads, you can in deed get benchrest gun accuracy. Got best results with 168 grain Berger VLD bullets at 2995 f/s (H 4813 with RWS Magnum Primers -nice practice load) and 210 grain Berger VLD bullets also at 2995 f/s (Norma MRP-2 with Fed 215 primer - very hard-hitting hunting load). Both loads shoot hole-in-hole at 100 meters. Brass was Lapua, which is the only brass that I would use for the 210 grain load at that speed, as it has a case volume approaching a .300 Whetherby (although Norma cases have a big case voume as well, I think. Remington .300WM cases have the smallest volume, by the way, I would stay away from these). Unfortunately, .300 WM cases have been discontunued by Lapua a while ago, luckily I bought a life-time supply.
